Picked up my 89 xjs coupe from shop a couple months ago. On the way home put window down (operated), but would not go up. Removed interior panel to access window. Push window switch - window start/stop/start/stop - then stops going up. I can hear motor "turning", but window channel/gears stops. Only way to get window all the way up is manually lifting/pulling channel/window. Seems like if motor was shot, it would not start lifting at all and make whirring noise when window stops moving up. Any ideas?

My off-the-cuff guess is that the gears/teeth on the motor, regulator...or both...are damaged

You might be able to see most of the regulator's teeth fairly easily. Probably have to pull the motor to check its teeth.
