I am usually vehemently against modifications in older Jaguars because IMO it looks tacky and tasteless to anyone except the person modding it,
BUT

plasti dipping is temporary. It peels right of. It's like face paint at a fair that washes of the next day. I even fooled with the idea of plasti dipping the chrome on my e type the color if the car and the wheels black on the xjs for kicks. I would never make it permanent though. I say go for it

Plasti Dip is very popular in the motorcycle community. We love it. There are even colors availible other than black now. Like Spike said, "it isnt permanent"...

Start with a small part and if you don't like the end result, peel it off.......

I would think this would be something you would do if your finish were completely shot, otherwise ............

I like the looks of that red XJS in the second link.

Is the plasti dip very durable? I'm thinking stone chips in paint...what happens to the dip when it's hit?

I say go for it! As long as you put it on nice and thick it will peel off easily. I believe they recommend several light coats, but I've also had luck with one heavy coat. It levels out very well. Every time I've used it, I've used a sprayer. I've never used the cans.

I took my wife's car for the day to change out a tie rod end, and wound up putting on some stripes. Surprise! She was actually really angry. The anger subsided when I peeled it off in 3 minutes.

I did my wheels with plastidip (there is a thread here a few months back with copious pictures) and I am happy to report that the results were fantastic, if I do say so myself. Further, it is tough as nails. I washed them the other day and was noticing how they still don't have a single chip or mar on them anywhere. They still look as good as the first day. My vote is to go for it!

Edit to add that the plastidip has a added benefit of covering and filling blemishes. It is kind of 'self leveling' for lack of a better term.

The video posted by Lenoat702 is all the convincing I need. I'm going to look into this for my Tacoma.

The stone bounces off because the PlastiDip is synthetic rubber in a areosol can
