Something in the boot

OK. I have a 1990 XJS-V12 and above the battery box is a little box above the battery cover. What is this? See photo.

Have you nudged the barrier away enough to peek behind it and see what sort of wires are connected to it?

Mine is an '87 coupe, so no help here. Maybe something to do with the convertible part of things?
