I just recently bought a 90 XJS V12 and its having the same issues. I talked to a few people that were mechanics and they said the electrical wire contact may just need cleaning and reconnecting to the sensor on the transmission. its been too hot to go searching under the car recently and i'm not sure exactly what i'm looking for. so if you know what it is and this works for you please let me know

Don't look for the sensor on the transmission. Around mid-88 the sensor was moved to the differential. The signal then goes to an interface unit in the trunk/boot, then to the speedo.
Cleaning connections is always a good place to start when ironing out Jag electrical problems....or any electrical problems, for that matter.
Also, the printed circuit on the back of the instrument cluster can cause trouble from dirty contacts or lack of grounding
