Default Steering Wheel Adjustment Problem

On my 1990 XJS

Instead of having a locking ring on the Steering Column to adjust the reach.

Instead it has a lever.

But as I have never used it, I don't know how its supposed to work.

When you disengage the Lever, are you supposed to pull the Steering Wheel either Towards or Away from you.

Or Move the Steering Wheel Up or Down.

I've tried to move it Up and Down after disengaging the Lever but it won't move.

What am I doing wrong?

OB,

If it's on the left, I think that's the same adjustment lever that carried through to the facelift cars. It just enables up and down adjustment of the column.

Hi Paul

Is it Spring Loaded or something?

When I disengage the lever and try and lower the Column it won't move, no matter how hard I try and pull the Steering Wheel down.

I THINK mine wants to stay up, so needs to be pushed down. Make sure the lever is all the way down, then try gentle pressure. Maybe turn the wheel a bit each way as you push down to try and free it off.. It's probably just got stuck in the up position, but go easy.

One of the downsides between <1989 and >1990. To 1989 only the reach was adjustable. From 1990 only the height.

In my scrap car, the lever would unlock with the lever and the column would shoot up via spring. Pull down to te desired height and done.

So of it won't go down anymore, that is because it already is in the down position.

Hi Daim

I never thought that it might already be down

so I will try pushing it upwards, although the linkage looks straight at the moment like its neither up or down.

Just be careful. The nearly same column is in my XJ and that has the reach adjustment too. Common thing to happen is the cable can snap. Though you should just have a little pusher/puller thing which will always return to the original position when let go.
