Default Stiff door hinge

Hi all,

Just taken delivery of a second hand driver's door hinge - the top one with the built in "S" shaped spring.

Looks good and there is no play in the hinge pin but I cannot open and close the hinge with my hands. Is this because:

1. I have a duff hinge?
2. I need to spend more time at the gym?
3. The spring, that allows the door to open in stages rather than simply pivot, is so strong that you need the door attached to provide sufficient leverage for the hinge to open / close?

The bottom hinge is easy to open and close by hand so I am hoping on option 3 above but want to check opinion before I take the door off.

Thanks,
LeeP
