Transmission R&R this weekend
The project is on a 1988 XJ-S 5.3
I fried the transmission. I was tempted to rebuild it, because it only has 53K miles on it. The rebuild kit is only $130 from NAPA. I anticipate about ten hours of labor (mine) to remove and replace, and another four or five to do the rebuild. I opted to just get a working TH400 transmission and swap them. That way I can take my time and rebuild the transmission with care over the winter months.
Reason for my post: Is there any words of wisdom for R&R on these models?
An example would be when I did the tranny on my 98 Jeep GC-L I had problems with the park rod. I bet I spent three hours trying to figure that out. The secret to keeping that in place when reinstalling, is to turn it so the valve body is on the underneith side, and install the park rod from the bottom up. It stays in place that way.
I am looking for similar advise for either the R&R of the whole transmission, OR for the detailed rebuild of the tranny.
I thank you all in advance for your "been there, done that" experiances.

I bought a transmission from an 87 XJS with 99k miles on it. They "assured" me it would fit my 88 xjs
If not, I will have my tranny out and buy a kit for $130 to give it all new seals and clutch plates.
