He also has a T5 out of a 80's Datsun 280, not sure how the gear ratios are set.

From a performance standpoint, I just don't see any reason to have overdrive in both 5th and 6th, like the Tremecs have. Double overdrive is a feature aimed at fuel economy, and face it...if anyone bought, or modified their V-12 powered XJS for fuel economy purposes, they need to go sit in a corner till they get their mind right

LOL, this made me laugh.

IMO the only reason you would use a double O would be if you had a 4:1 or lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion. which is exactly why theyre using them in modern 4 bangers and big V8 cars.

So True, but, it's just wrong to use a double overdrive tranny with the stock XJS 2.88 diff. With such gearing, 6th gear is basically useless, and one will need to downshift to 4th in order to have any kind of aggressive acceleration at highway speeds (i.e. as when passing another car). Even with my 3.54 diff, I would be very hesitant to use a double overdrive transmission, such as a Tremec 6-speed.

That's just my opinion though.

I was nearly there anyway but this last post has made my mind up to forget the T-56 & go with a TKO. Now the question is 500 or 600 & standard ratios or close ratios, stick with the 3.54 diff or go to a 2.88 diff?

I've put together a spreadsheet with the relevant information showing engine speeds with the various ratios etc etc. is there anyone who'd have a look at this spreadsheet if I email it? A) to confirm my formulas/calculations are correct & B) to try & help me understand the effects the different ratios/combinations will have on acceleration.

I'd like the engine to be turning less revs at 80mph than it is currently but I'm also looking to improve the acceleration through the gears - I guess I'm wanting the best of both worlds really.

Thanks

Mike.

Mike,

Check your private messages. I have an Excel spreadsheet you will want to see and play with.

Here are a couple of T5 sites I found helpful.

COOL CATS » Celebrating the 1983-88 Mercury Cougar » Modifying : Ford Borg-Warner T-5 Manual Transmission Data

TTC: TREMEC Transmissions

the best way to go is going to be the bell from www.5speeds.com and a ford t5 from a 5.0 or a cobra which are about 1000 rebuilt which is what i am running, and i spinn the 275s without any problem and the trans is still there

Is that the V12 multi-pattern bellhousing from 5Speeds.com?

Multi Pattern does not mean it works on the 6.0L block though...

It has bolt and locating pin holes for early and later 5.3's only.

The 6 liter is a different animal.

I got a hold of Robert from thedrivenman.com, in regards to their 5-speed kit to my 5.3l. All seems fine, but guy just disappeared for a week and not responding. Not sure what to expect if I place that order, any advice?

Default The Driven Man

I bought a street aluminum flywheel from him a few years back on his ebay store and the transaction went well. I have heard some people say they have had issues with the delivery of trans kits from him, but that may be more of a keisler issue.

Jagzilla, can you reveal some of the details of what you used to get that trans behind the 12? I'm trying to get some kind of 6 spd behind a 6.0L. The new t56 can be had with 2.97 1st and the two top gears can be easily changed out for .80 and .68. The main concern for me is the shifter on the R.O.D being so bulky. How did it work out for you?

I'll do better than that. Here is an article by a guy I know, who documented what he did when he put a ROD in his XJS: Richmond Transmission

I got my Tremec to function fairly well. I am actually enjoying the feel and power of 5 speed next to V12.

You just need the XJS manual pedal box assembly, alter the prop length and talk money to me
It was originally bought to convert a Lynx Eventer into the ultimate 'station wagon' with 7lt TWR Engine, 200mph was projected...Still got lots of stuff left as it didn't get off the ground...
Hi Sean,

Intriguing thread. Might just be my project now..... still not finished ;-)
Can you come back to me on this one? Any info is welcome!

That's going to be tough, since you responded to a thread from 2013...
