Default 08 XKR airbag light on

Hi all,

Looking at an 08 XKR for sale but it has the airbag light illuminated. What are the possible causes of this and, of course, the costs involved in getting it sorted? Need to take this into account when making an offer on the car. It also has the low key battery fault if it has any relevance?

Thanks in advance, Steve.

Hi Steve,
All depends on where it is for sale, trade or private and at what price. You would need to get the code read to pin point what is wrong with the airbag, but the flash code would be a good start. Could just be a dodgy connection.

Low key battery would probably just need changing

Hope this helps.

Another point. Depending on the seller (Good, bad or indifferent), a common crooked practice showing its ugly head in the used car market is that airbags are being removed and the sensors bypassed. They then sell the bags for a good profit on fleabay while the car owner never knows the bag is not there. Not saying that is your case, but it is becoming a newsworthy problem for many used car buyers in the US.
Always be in a "Buyer Beware" mode!

Possible bad clockspring. Start the car with the steering wheel straight ahead. IF there's no bag light, then steer the car far right or left. If the light comes on when you do.....most likely a bad clockspring.

Clockspring is the electrical connection b/t the moving steering wheel and the fixed portion of the car. It makes the electrical connection b/t the moving wheel and fixed portion. Get it?????

If the bag light is on all the time............hard to say what the cause is off hand.

It's item 8 in the attached jpg. Don't try to make sense of the word 'clock' or 'spring'. That is it's name and it's the electrical connection b/t a moving part and a fixed harness. Do a search online for CLOCK SPRING or even the same search on this forum using those words and you'll get hits.

http://video.search.yahoo.com/search...CK+SPRING+WORK I watched the video called Chrysler clockspring and it seemed to give you a good idea of how to replace one. But your car is NOT a chrysler. The Jag workshop manual gives you instructions on how to replace one.

I would not buy a Jag with the airbag light on all the time. Tell them to get it fixed first. I'd also ask if the airbag had ever been deployed before. Clock spring for a Jag XK runs 185-200 bucks.
