The engine overheat light comes on periodically, not sure if it is a faulty sensor or if in fact the engine is running hot. Is it normal for the cooling fans to keep running after the engine is shut off?

Thanks, Dale

Just curious here , did you check your coolant level?

I don't remember my fans running after shutdown. Note there are threads here on thermostat and plastic housing failures of an internal baffle that can cause overheat. I replaced mine and had no troubles after. Thermo housing has the temp sender integrated into it.

Same here...I don't think my fans ran either after shutdown!

Until you know otherwise I would trust the sensor and shut the engine off ASAP. The fan running after the engine is shut off is another indication of a problem.

First check your coolant level. If it is low look for any evidence of leakage. If the coolant level is OK get an IR thermometer, they are cheap at Harbor Freight, and use it to check the coolant temperature. If the coolant level is OK and the temperature is high I would check the radiator for blockage and then change the thermostat.

Good point, I made the assumption that the service shop did check when the full service was completed. Thanks.

My first rule of auto mechanics:
Don't assume anyone (yourself included) doing anything to your car did it right until you check it to confirm.

Maybe you can answer this, is there only idiot lights telling you that the engine is hot or can you find a display on the screen that gives you actual temperature. Same goes for oil pressure.
Thanks, Dale

There is a just a warning light that comes on to warn you that your engine is about to die.

Therre are several threads on adding gauge options. This is what I have:

If the fan stays running post engine shut down the engine is excessively hot and need immediate attention. Historically, on an XK it's the T-stat housing fails jamming the T-stat or chunks fall into the water pump or the T-stat's rubber cover delaminates causing it to stick. The housing and T stat replacement isn't terribly difficult or expensive. The water pump is a little more difficult but easier once the housing is out of the way.

Either way it must be addressed or you will not be running it for long.

A stuck-closed thermostat is evidenced by the combination of a very hot motor and comparatively cool radiator.
Buy a ScanGauge, which plugs into your OBDII port. It can offer coolant temp so as to confirm/cross check your idiot light.

I have ordered a Autool X50 meter to monitor the temp.

I would take the time to pop the T stat housing apart to inspect it before running it further. Did you download the X150 service manual yet?

It looks like you are going to play a high stakes gamble here. My suggestion would be to not run the car until you get the gauge on it and then if it starts be prepared to shut it down if the WT goes over 210* F. If it starts to exceed that then you either need to start tearing things apart or flat bed it to someone who can find/fix it.

I agree that you should not run the car until you fix the cooling problem.

The coolant water temperature can safely go over 210*F. Both my XK and XJ routinely go over that. The thermostat is not fully open until it gets to 205*F. On hot days in Tucson [115*F] my XK will get to ~223*F when sitting at a stoplight. Others have reported similar temperatures. Jaguar turns on the idiot warning indicator at 245*F. The coolant should boil at about 255*F so the idiot indicator gives a little margin.

I set my warning to go off at 225*F.

Dave I was assuming he start it in his driveway and watch as the temp rises. If he has a problem which we believe he would see the temp rise rapidly without driving the car. I see your point but not having temps as you see my WT has not been past 207*F in NY.

Bottom line, if the idiot light is illuminating he has a problem that needs to be fixed before driving the car.
