Headlight and front bumper ends up totaling the car! Dang. Got reversed into at about 3-4 mph. Very little damage, but the headlight is now shooting off into a random direction. Not at fault- their insurance is paying for the car, but I am buying it back. I don't know what my next move should be!

 

Find the parts on eBay. Also, since you have part numbers, just google them.

 

Forgot to mention, that just sucks.

Your next move should be to have it repaired, if you really enjoy driving it. The damage is minor, and does not appear to affect driveability. But the cost of repairs is high because that new replacement adaptive headlight is $4,191.91 - almost half of the total repair cost! Used adaptive headlights come up for sale on eBay from time to time, and might be able to be found by your body shop. Good ones sell for around $1,500.

This repair doesn't appear to require the expertise of a shop experienced with Jaguar X150 models.

I'm not sure if you can get an additional payment for "Diminished Value" in your state if the vehicle is totaled. You may want to check with your insurance company or your agent.

Seconded for Ebay; I needed a replacement front fender for my 2010 - dealer wants ≈2300 USD (plus tax) for panel alone and would need paint and installation. Found OEM used for 800 USD in same colour locally on Ebay. Buy the car back from insurance and have a decent shop (or yourself...) replace the panels. Straightforward work for good body shop.

 

The insurance company is likely valuing the car at about $11,700, and damage exceeds 70%

 

Sorry for your bad luck. Hard to believe that's a total. I would agree with others about buying parts. Looks like an easy repair.
The unfortunate aspect is you'll now have a car with a branded or salvage title.

 

I agree with David993S. Do not allow the insurance company to declare your car salvage.
It is a scarlet letter that your car won't be able to live down.
Your own agent should be able to step in to provide assistance.
Agree to the use of "salvage" parts to reduce the repair cost.

 

What stupid place you let do the estimate on your car?it don't cost that much to replace a bumper and a headlight.This is probably a $2,500-$3,000 job at best.You don't even need the other stuff they mentioning unless you obviously see it damaged when this all just looks cosmetic.3 or 4mph really didn't damage nothing but what you see and I can promise you that when i hit something far worst with mine going faster and it didn't do any damage at all but put lines in the paint on my car

I bought a headlight for my old XKR off ebay and never put it on that i bought for like $500 back in 2017.I can probably sell him mine,but forgot if i bought it for the left or right side.I would have to go look at it.I would sell it to him the same price i bought it for

 

I’m of a different opinion…. and I think any old school body shop should be able to repair that.

The newbies are all about swapping parts. Not the really skilled ones. I would go to a reputable body shop that deals with historic restorations. It might take 2 weeks…

 

I had my 07 declared a total after it was flooded in the Helene storm surge. It had a broken odometer but had about 65,000 miles on it. Progressive gave me $15,000 for it and I was happy. FWIW

I haven't bought a replacement. I loved that car, though! The house was ruined, too, so no point in replacing the car yet.

 

If you buy your own car back from the insurance, they don't touch the title. It's still yours and you already HAVE the clean title. Any vehicle has to be sold AS a salvage to have the title branded.
I've done this a few times, always clean.

I DO suppose maybe a few states (or countries) may do something different though, but extra titling would be extra work and cost for the insurance so I doubt they would want to pay for that.

 

Cee Jay, we are in agreement. The point is to avoid "diminution of value" through branding of the title.
Any agreement for payment should clearly state that compensation is for repairs and the vehicle IS NOT to be reported as "salvage/total loss, etc.
My understanding is that in many states (mine included), the insurance company is required to report such to DMV.
Undoing a total loss report approaches the impossible.

 

Absolutely correct Bill. All of the specifics on title branding vary from state to state but every insurance company reports to Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) and is where the information about your vehicle's loss will reside for eternity. This is the same place that prevents people with bad loss payout claims and history from jumping insurance companies to save money after an incident.

 

The headlight mounts can just be rewelded if the parts weren't lost (sometimes when they were lost too).

Look for a place that either specializes in regenerating/tuning car lights (stuff like LED conversions, wrapping headlights etc) or just a company that welds plastic parts. I went through the same thing myself, both lamps are good to go, it cost me (with full restoration/cleaning of the insides and PPF wrap - most expensive part of service) around 700 eur.

Given no mounts are broken, the bumper situation looks like you should just be able to take off the wide emblem part and just leave the growler emblem. Then remount the grille and everything should be fine.
