5.0 XKR Full Muffler Delete!
Ok gang, many of you know I have tried about 10 different combinations of stock exhaust configuration with and without resonator 1, 2 etc, with my Mina rear muffler and without resonator 1, 2 etc.
Well the one thing I had not tried which I have done with many of my other cars is just loosing the muffler and replacing with straight pipe. Sounds quite nasty! No drone below 2k with the 2 factory resonators in place. Just a bit of drone in some gears around 2k but not any worse than the Quicksilver car I rode in.
Cost would be about $400 for custom piping and high-end tips about $80 each.
So according to my exhaust R&D experimenting the options are:
1) Stock which has a slightly good sound. But you can barely enjoy it from inside the car. Too quiet for me.
Cost: Free
2) Mina Gallery Muffler - Slightly louder than stock and with a more "pedigreed" sound. Less blap, blap and more high end sound like Aston or something. NO DRONE at all. Looks MUCH better than stock; the looks alone almost worth $. Great metal work tips are integrated and look awesome. The inner edge of them don't show as with almost all tips
Cost: $1200 new (or $600 for mine).
3) Stock or Mina muffler without the two resonators in the middle - replaced with straight pipe. Sounds raw, aggressive, snaps crackle and pops. Some drone drone.
Cost: $100
Cost: with x-pipe $150. Less drone I believe and tames the sound to a more mellifluous sound which sounds more complex and F1 like from inside.
4) Keep stock resonators in place and loose the rear muffler replacing with straight pipes and tips. Awesome sound. Very raw, snaps crackls and pops more than a gigantic bowl of Rice Krispies! Great overrun. I just about never listen to the radio now. The volume is high giving the car great presence. More drone than stock or the Mina exhaust but if you have had exhausts on performance cars before it will not be too much.
Cost: $400
Hope this helps!

If you want to get a sense of how "not quiet" it is look at the last clip and remember that the camera woman is actually in another car. Sometimes you forget that the clip is not from within the car itself.
That is quite loud for someone else to experience as you only moderately get on the throttle! Also keep in mind it is much louder in person than in the clips!

Way to go!
Great idea! It is basically the Quicksilver set-up but at 1/5th the price, any tips you like and all the noise! Plus you said less drone... Perfect!
I think I'll go this route sinceI would like larger tips. I'm just afraid it may get too loud with the Milltek Cats that have upped the volume a lot already.
Thanks Evoking!

Evoking, another great post! I'm predisposed to 'Cat' analogies with our XKR's, but damned if @ 1:56 of your second video doesn't sound like a SERIOUSLY angry tiger/lion...
Much as I love the notion of having a 'gentleman's' car with exhaust from hell, I admit that I can't get enough of the active (stock) XKR exhaust. Soooo quiet when I'm trying to be low-key or shuttle a family member around. Then the switch to dyno mode and a romp on the throttle... A thing of beauty. Especially in tunnels/canyons. Windows down, RPM UP!

Great thread! And love evoking's dedication to finding the perfect sound for the xkr.
I just picked up a 2010 black on black xkr convertible and I love it! I only wish it were louder but still classy and refined.
Evoking: I may hit you up regarding the mina exhaust. Still researching. Too new to pm but would love to touch base with you!
