AFS headlight problem

AFS headlight problem
A couple of months ago, my AFS headlights malfunctioned after the battery had been disconnected for a few days while modifications were being done to my car.
The headlights would not return to straight ahead and looked like a crosseyed cat with beams pointing down to the ground and side to side.
We had the lights reprogrammed and everything went back to normal. Over the past couple of months it would occasionally happen, but usually, restarting the car restored it to normal. A couple of weeks ago, it malfunctioned again and would not return to normal. Reading the codes returned a right headlight motor fault. My question is do you need to replace the whole headlight or will the AFS module replacement cure this? Or is there a motor inside the headlight that can be replaced?
Has anyone had this experience?

Hi,
There are both motors and modules that control them. I learned this when, I researched replacing our darn expensive headlights (approx $2200 ea). Mine had a number of broken bolt attachment tabs. (geez those tabs are weak). I think, I still have three complete light units, one of which, has a bad motor, or, so I was told. Those modules simply plug into the unit. I found complete lights selling for $250 to $600 on Ebay. I bought one for $400 and it had a repaired tab.
Good Luck in your research...

I apologize for resurrecting this thread, but it looked like the appropriate place to ask this. I'm getting the frenetic adaptive headlight warning on my dash and it appears the left adaptive headlight is malfunctioning. A local Jag shop tells me it's either the control module or the motor, but that neither is available separately from the $2500 headlight assembly.
Looking at this diagram (2010 Jaguar XKR Parts - Jaguar Parts Center - Call (800) 510-1401 for Genuine Jaguar Parts and Accessories) at Jaguar Merriam Parts, it looks like they DO have the adaptive control module available, but I don't see the motor. I was curious if someone who's deal with this can shed some light on the part numbers needed so we can turn this thread into the definitive reference.

popawoody,
I just went through this with my right headlight. The control module is a "plug-in" module located on the outside of the headlamp assembly, the motor is inside of the assembly, and I was told is not replaceable. I just replaced the whole assembly by purchasing a spare used one from a fellow forum member. ($450.00). Prior to replacement, my headlights looked like a crosseyed lion and pointed straight down so that I couldn't drive at night. Back to normal now. I saw a used one listed on ebay (I can't remember which side) a few days ago for $200.00. I'm considering buying it as a future replacement.

Hey Mates,
When I experienced a headlight replacement, there were a number of complete assemblies on Ebate. You just need to make sure they are of the correct type for your car, (adaptive/non-adaptive) type. I needed one that didn't have all of the tabs broken. The price ranged from $200 to $700.
Good Luck....
