It seems JLR are taking the issue seriously. I had a letter from JLR regarding a free updated security protocol for my 22 RR Sport, one of the popular targets. I checked with the dealer who warned me that if I had this upgrade implemented and lost a key I would have to buy a new module for several thousand dollars. The dealers could not program a new key. I decided to go ahead and when I took the vehicle in the technician said the cost of the module had been reduced to a couple of hundred dollars. The upgrade was available across the whole JLR range back to 2017 if I recall correctly, so not available for "our" cars. According to JLR the effect in the UK has been dramatic with thefts down to single digits in the trial period.
Personally I would prefer a properly engineered cryptographic security system to a third party system that may have unforeseen flaws or weaknesses.
one side effect may be that the number of car jackings and break-ins to get keys will increase, but surely not in a peaceful country like Canada.

The Jaguar Smartkey is not "just another key." It is a highly sophisticated digital vault.
Years ago, Jaguar had problems with the X100 and other models being stolen because the keyfobs were so quickly and easily cloned. To prevent this, Jaguar created a diabolical new design - the X150 Smartkey - that made it virtually impossible for thieves to use a cheap "code grabber" to quickly and easily clone the key and steal the car. Unfortunately, that also made it expensive for owners to replace a key.
From the factory, each X150 Smartkey is electronically paired with modules in the car. If that Smartkey is separated from the car with which it was born, it becomes an orphan. That orphaned Smartkey must first be electronically divorced from its parent before it can be reprogrammed and paired with another X150 for it to be fully functional. All keys and the car must be present to simultaneously program and pair their modules using the proprietary Jaguar SDD software.
