Question Brake Dust...Inquiring minds want to know.

I've noticed what I and the better half seem to think is a considerable amount of brake dust, at least more than what we are used to seeing on previous cars. I can wash the car, clean the wheels and take 1 trip around town and it's back!

Is this normal? If not what should I be doing to or have done to solve this?

Thanks, CG

Mine had new pads all around when I got it. Like yours, one trip and wheels were black. I finally had enough and swapped over to ceramics for the front. No brake dust after a 700 mile trip to the gulf.

Some say you have to burnish them in but when I installed them on two of my BMW's I didn't. I did hit these hard a couple times but not enough to get them hot. I can't tell any change in the way it stops.

I just put ceramics on all four wheels on my 2006 Land Rover LR3. Virtually NO Brake Dust!!!!! I'm LOVIN' IT!!

I just wish I had put ceramics on my XK when I had new pads installed a few months ago. I used OEMs from the dealer and well, you all know the rest of that dusty story...

Where did you find front ceramics? I have been unable find them for my '07 XK. Rears are available but no front.

Ceramic pads Debbie. I did some quick checking online and found ceramics available for front and rear on the XK.

What I'm not finding is an upgraded brake system, such as Brembo or Baer. But then again I'm not running 5 to 6oo horse either. (I wish)

Thank you Cigar Guy. (I need another name here ....lol)

I will check into them when my pads need replaced. So far, so good.
And I won't get my high priced tech to do the work. He's killing me!

You guys should give Armorall "wheel protectant" or a similar product by Eagle One a try. A lot less expensive than ceramic pads and less controversial too.

My wheels are Silver sparkle and I like the sheen it provides.

Default Use this

I started adding a cap full of Optimum No Rinse Wash & Shine to my regular car shampoo and I can go 3-4 weeks without brake dust and I use my xkr as a daily driver... I can now also go 2 weeks between car washes since I started using this stuff, it repels dust from the entire car.

A recent Road & Track article explained that there are no standards for what can be called a "ceramic" brake pad and that their tests showed some ceramic pads didn't hold up well (faded) after repeated high- speed stops. Bottom line: buyer beware; do your research.

Rather than compromising braking power, I found a way to clean the wheels quickly. I use unscented baby wipes from the grocery store and then use Armorall wheel protectant. I can do all four wheels in about ten minutes and they stay clean for several weeks.
