Ceramic Brake Pad Change Over

Ceramic Brake Pad Change Over
Since time began I have been "philosophically" opposed to ceramics for the usual reasons. This past Mon. I completed the change over from OEM to ceramics all around. The brake dust and resultant ugly wheels was more than I could tolerate.
Actually, the rears were done this past Feb. with excellent results. The fronts took 3 hours due to me detailing the wheels and calipers.
Fronts: AdvanceAuto Wearever GNAD 1241 $56.99
Rears: AdvanceAuto Wearever GNAD 1095 $34.99
Caliper Paint: Rust-Oleum Hammered Finish (silver) "Delicious" says I.
I'm calling out the cost to demonstrate that you don't need a car load of money to switch over. Braking performance, as expected, was ever so slightly, degraded for normal work and unaffected, maybe improved, for panic stops.

Reports of increased ware on disks, more expensive than OEM spec. and reduced braking in normal service (harder pedal).

I'm confused! you said 'Wearever GNAD1241 & GNAD 1095' ! these are Wearever GOLD pads which are not Ceramic they are Semi Metalic......Wearever Platimun's are Ceramic and part nos. start with a P not a G!
So what do you really have fitted?
Really hope I'm wrong about this!

Well let me check into this. I certainly don't want to put out a bum steer. Thanks for the heads up.
I ordered ceramic pads and I think the the boxes were labeled "ceramic". If there has been a mistake made I will report back. I will say this. Whatever these pads are they have certainly cured my brake dust issue.

Checking online, it says that they come in either semi-metallic or ceramic. I'm sure you have ceramic.

Adrian,
I went back to the Advance Web Site. The brake pads I ordered are identified as "ceramic" and the boxes the came in were labeled "ceramic", although I no longer have the boxes. Can you direct me to where it says that GNAD series pads can't be ceramic? I wonder if there is such a thing as "Semi Ceramic"?
Whatever they are they seem to have done the trick. The backs are into their 6th month and I no longer use "wheel protectant" products on these wheels. The fronts have just a few weeks and appear to be working as well as the backs but "wheel protectant" is still residual on the front wheels.

You are correct! even though hey are 'Gold' Advance Auto shows your part nos. as Ceramic!
There description of 'Gold' says Semi-Metalic or Ceramic depending on OEM type. That's is what mislead me because Jaguar OEM is Semi's; plus they do have Wearever Platinum (Ceramic) with P part no.'s but not for our vehicles. Very confusing..........
Very sorry I was dead wrong! Hope I didn't spoil your day!
I wonder if you can order GNAD 1241 & 1095 with Semi-metalic (OEM)?
Once again sorry..................glad to be wrong............and glad they are better, low dust. I think I will try them too!
Cheers, Adrian

Adrian,
When I ordered "on line" there was a nice discount after a certain "total order" price point. The price to begin with was most attractive and with the discount it got better. There may have been free shipping involved but I forget. I ordered some misc oil, fuel and air filters to get up to the discount price break level if I recall.

TRW was probably the OEM manufacturer of the front pads and Textar was probably the OEM manufacturer of the rear pads of the base XK. When pricing fitting sets of various manufacturers on the web, a part number including "1241" often relates to the front pads and "1095" to the rear pads. Some time ago I replaced rear pads with Advance Auto's Wearever brand ceramic pads, made in India. Satisfied to this point. I've just purchased a set of ceramic front TRW TPC1241 pads "Made in IN" from True Blue Auto Parts on eBay for $64 including shipping. Amazon sells TRW TPC1241 for $80+tx and quotes a list price circa $160. AdvanceAuto.com's current Wearever front ceramics are circa $65, and TRW semi-metallic are listed as a special-order item @ circa $125. TireRack currently lists Akebono EUR1241 on special as of 2 Feb 2015.

Ceramics only way to go. I have Akebono all around. Changed every one of my vehicles to ceramic. Was sick of spending weekends cleaning wheels. Now, its never.

I agree 100% I will never be a slave again to all the horrendous brake dust and in this case noise as well. I was not able to get the Akebono for my fronts, but the Centrics are doing the job. I just don't get it how anyone would drive without ceramics. I had them on my G35 after a few years of ownership and now it's the only way to go.

I just got my dream car a XKR175 and would really like to get ceramics as the dust these stock pads put out are ridiculous. I do not have manuals yet and unclear what size disc/rotors I have. Would like some assistance if someone could recommend (with part numbers for front/rear) that would be awesome. I am partial to EBC red pads but if there are better for these cars totally open.
Thanks in advance--Steve

Welcome to the Jaguar world and the Forum. In the search at the top of the page enter changing disc pads and you will find more than one thread dealing with changing disc pads. At least one of them has a series of pictures outlining the whole process. You will also find at least one thread dealing with the pads themselves which will probably provide sufficient information. If that doesn't work got to one of the forum's sponsors and you will find information regarding disc pads for your particular XK.
