Cool "Drive" wheel

I have had my '09 XKR for 2000 miles and have to replace the right rear tire; since has worn completely out.
I call the Knoxville, TN Jag dealer and they said that this was common with a heavy foot since the right rear tire is the "drive" side; it starts first and then the left rear wheel engages.
I realize I just got my R two months ago, however, buying a $500 tire is no fun. Has anyone else had this phenomenon occur? Is it common?
I love my R and if that is a price for it, oh well. Even though my foot will have to lighten, I still love that 1st gear exhaust tone!

You might get a useful response on this forum, but it is dedicated to the earlier models XK8/XKR ending 2006. Select the next listing on the Jaguar Models page for 2007 on. And welcome to the Jaguar Forums.

That, regarding the right rear tire being the "drive side" sound an entirely new and strange explanation to me. More like "nonsense".

If the tire was brand new, 2000 mile wear is way too fast, unless you were tracking or auto-crossing the car on a regular basis. What was the wear pattern across the thread? Was it even or was most of the wear indicating an alignment issue? Did you check your wheel alignment? Too much camber or too much toe (in or out) can cause rapid tire wear. That is where my suspicion would be centered.

I have 8000 miles on my set of tires and hardly can tell the wear. But, mine is largely freeway driving with about 10-15 percent of winding road driving.

The phenomenon that the dealer was referring to was the fact that most limited slip differentials favor the right wheel prior to locking up, which in effect means it favors the right side and it wears faster. AXR6, I don't think the tire was new, just that the car is new to him. If you keep an eye on your rear tread depths, it makes sense to flip the tires left to right if the wear is getting too uneven between the two. Your tires are likely directional as well, which means a trip to your local tire dealer to get them dismounted and remounted correctly on the appropriate sides.

Also, it's worth mentioning that you should try and avoid buying a single tire. If the right side is that worn out, your left is likely not too far behind. At the very least, though, remember never to mix and match different tire brands and types on a car... that can lead to unpredictable handling and results.

I don't believe the XKR had limited slip prior to 2010, so your uneven wear is maybe not too surprising given your heavy foot nature and enjoyment of 1st gear. Good opportunity to practice "drifting" before replacing if that's been on your list!
