Luckily I'm not doing the work!
I would be at a totally loss if I did this as I'm very forgetful!
They haven't had many issues with it so far, hopefully it stays that way!
Hope everyone has a good christmas
Hats' off to you btw pauleddy. Even if you're not doing the work yourself, it's great to see someone actually repair an engine instead of replacing, where possible.
Have you considered getting your crank assembly balanced (blueprinted) while you have all of it out?
I'll get as many pics as possible
I'm not going to do this, as the crank is staying in asim only replacing 1 piston! Plus, I would imagine Jaguar being quite stringent with their tolerances..?

Unfortunately, Jaguar gave up balancing to save costs many years ago. Having crank out and getting it balanced is not a lot of extra labor now that you have the engine out and in parts. Plus all new crank bearings will all but reset mileage on your block - you will have as-new engine.
You also mentioned that the likely cause is detonation - keep in mind that pistons that didn't break also had the same force going through. Unless you fixing to sell, you want to know the condition of crank bearings and wrist pin bearings. It would be really disappointing to get a death rattle in couple thousand miles after you had engine out and apart and easily accessible for fixes.
Detonation does not do only localized damage. The force is distributed through other cylinders, crank and there is a possibility of burnt valves. At the very least, replace vale springs, valve stem seals and lifters in a cylinder than had damage.
A few members are having problems with the 5l SC engine. Ninety-five percent of members have no problems and some have over 100,000 miles with no problems. What is the source of the problems? Overheating from water pump failure, sludge plugging up oil holes in tensioners, etc? It would be good to know the sources and the applicable preventative maintenance.
Good luck with your engine rebuilding. I hope you take the time to do a thorough check and replace of any other defective parts, transmission, engine mounts, supercharger, water pump, etc., while you have everything out with easy access.
Hi. I'm rebuilding a 5.0 supercharged engine and was wandering if you managed to source the big end torque settings as yet. Cant seem to find them anywhere.
thanks

I think it was a failed injector that caused it to detonate, I've replaced an engine mount, water pump and thermo while it's all out!

Yes, see attached. First column is in NM and second is in lb/ft

Just a bit of an update. For the last 6 months I've been having issues with it not running right and then all of a sudden pouring blue smoke (i hadn't taken the car back yet it was still with the garage). They refused to give me my money back until it took a bit of persuading, took it to another garage who found they installed the piston incorrectly without gapping the pistons. So got that changed again, still wasn't running right. Idled fine, but then under load it was slow then come up with a few misfires.
Mechanic got his thermo camera and noticed the cat on Bank 1 wasn't uniformly heated, opened it up and found this! And after all that, this was the original cause. 6 months of testing things and buying new bits, to find out it was only this. How annoying. Oh well, it's back now and perfect weather for it
