Default Even Jay Leno has car problems

Yesterday afternoon returning to the San Fernando Valley from Beverly Hills via Coldwater Canyon, I saw a beautiful 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 stuck in the middle of Coldwater heading southbound. I was northbound looking at the car when I noticed a white-haired gentleman waving traffic around his car, and as I passed him and saw his face, I noticed it was Jay Leno. Those of us in L.A. see him often cruising the streets in one of his hundreds of cars on a regular basis. My daughter, on her way home about an hour later on the same route, saw him climbing into a tow truck, the Galaxie trailing behind. It happens to everyone!

Yeah, and it was probably his personal mechanic in his own tow truck. Wish I had those kinds of problems....

Tow truck? What, is he on welfare? When I break down I accept nothing less than an airlift from my personal CH-53.

That makes great sense, considering all the traffic in LA!

He's a genuinely nice guy, who shows up to many local car shows, is always friendly, and always interesting. Hope it wasn't anything too serious.

If it's serious, and he can't find a part....he'll just crank up his 3D printer and make it!

He has a full machine shop. I believe he has a waterjet. Which means he can make any gasket, any o-ring, anytime.
Even the gasket suppliers have gone to the waterjet method.

Yeah, he's quite "out-fitted" for that.

I'm catching up though...I have a friend with 3D printing skills. I'll have to encourage him to get a "Water-jet" next..... Ha, Ha, Ha!
Got him working on this....

Yeah, conventionally it's just a turn job other then those tabs. I'd rough mill them and the wire EDM to finished specs. Of course plastic 3d print would be so much simpler.

Yes this is a part for a lathe. Plastic printed part will never survive the wear.

In the end, we know there are a number of hurdles.

1. As far as materials are concerned, the materials available for 3D printing have much improved with a number of the materials being very tough.
2. A calculation has to include an allowance for shrinkage as the materials in production will cool, obviously, will affect final fit. My friend is aware of this and will compensate.
3. There is very little machining that can be done to "true it" after the part is produced as the materials are basically a "stranded" component.

My friend does have experience as he has made numerous gears, and other mechanised components for his own use in designing a machine that can scan a human body.

We'll see and I report back with the results.

BTW Ken,
This looks like a common part on Karacher pressure washers?

Yes, this drawing is an end section of a Karcher (actually McCulloch) style wand that connects to the pressure gun. I'm seeking this adapter to allow a Foam canon to be adapted to the pressure gun head. Simply stated, it allows the pressure wand to be removed and a Foam cannon connected.
I have since located several adapters on the market that "may" work as seen in the pic. I found these only after initiating this project.
So, at this time we're attempting to see if it's feasible to make one specifically for the McCulloch sprayer.

They sell what you are looking for. cheaper than a martini!
Who are these friends of yours that let you reinvent the wheel and charge you to make it.

BTW I use that same foam cannon and it works wonders.
However, I am not sold on the idea working better than a bucket.

Thanks! There are a bunch out there and LAVOR is the closest, I'm finding.
This is becoming more of an exercise in the pleasure of making it.......
Ranchero50 will understand this to some degree.

I think we have $150 in design hours and 1,50 cents in materials.....?
It's all about the journey in the world of automotive restoration.
