Default Fuel Filler Cap - where should the tether be fixed? - RESOLVED

After filling the tank today I found the filler cap lying on the ground next to the car. The tether had come loose.

The tether isn't broken and I found the plastic fixing screw but can't be sure where it goes. There's two possible fixing holes in the filler bowl (arrowed in red and yellow):

Which of these is the right one? Neither of them look easily accessible with a screwdriver!

The red one. I had mine getting loose a couple of months ago and did some research on where the tether should anchor. The yellow hole is there so that in case the flap won't open, it could be opened by inserting a long screwdriver from under the wheel arch to push a pin just above that hole. Hope this helps.

Speaking of the gas cap, does anyone else find that it gets in the way of the nozzle while filling? Mine does, I have to hold it sideways so nothing gets damaged.

Cee Jay, the filler cap is supposed to rest on the hinge of the flap, there's a curved section lip which fits the underside of the edge of the filler cap.

Some detail I came across while searching where the tether anchors.

Holy crap. All these years and I didn't know that. Thanks. MUCH better! I still like the magnetic cap I had on the XK8.

Cee Jay I've come to realize that, as in life, there's a reason for everything with our cars

A secret revealed only to those who read as far as Page 26 in the Driver's Handbook.

Thanks Andrew.

I hope I never need to use the 'long screwdriver' release technique!
