Default Gas cap was off and now check engine light wont go away

I've seen several similar posts but I didn't see any resolution. I hate to take the car to the shop for nothing but I hate to ignore something.

The little connector cable was stuck under the cap and prevented a seal. I got the gas cap warning upon startup. Turned it off. Fixed the cap. Restarted and now the check engine has been on for three days.

Any experiences other than "take it to the shop"?

Stop at an Autozone and let them check it with a scan tool. It's free and won't bugger the car up beyond what you have. Once you know what codes your are coding we can diagnose the problem. Possibly not even gas cap related.

Low stress...

If it IS the Evap Fail caused because of the cap, it sometimes takes 60+ miles of driving with a close-to-half tank of fuel to let it sort itself out. Never a full tank, never close to empty.

I didn't want to chime in until someone with more knowledge and experience did first... But yeah, it took what seemed like an abnormally long time for mine to turn off too. But it did eventually turn off.

It finally went off this weekend! I'd say it took about 75 miles of driving which took a few weeks for me, lol.

This is your best advice. I had the same issue in an older Nissan Altima. The code returned was cleared after being read and all was well again.

When the battery is disconnected, the EVAP self-test needs to run before the emissions goes to "green" status. Disconnecting the battery would cause the self-test to initialize. The disconnect may make the CEL go away for a bit, but not necessarily. Best to let the car do what it needs to do.
