This may be off the wall; but why don't you check out British Autowood? they specialize in gear shift knobs and wood dashboards and are not limited to wood. Telephone 407-744-5332. Website: www.britishautowood.com

Saul does excellent wood work, but I'm pretty sure that he doesn't have the equipment to fabricate either the black vinyl sticker or stainless steel J-gate overlay that I suggested in my previous post.

Not an OEM solution other than buying new parts. Members have used various DIY methods such as paint, marker foil, etc.

Hi all
The chrome around my shifter started peeling and rapidly got worse until I had to do something.
The replacement parts are stupidly expensive as it is the whole shifter assembly.
My solution was to sand the plastic chrome and paint what was left with satin black to make it invisible under the aluminium overlay I purchased on E-Bay.

Fitting was easy once the gear knob and collar were removed, I got lucky and they came off together just by turning anti-clockwise, it was tight but only needed hands not tools.

This addition has transformed the appearance of the shifter area and totally hidden the peeling chrome.
On the photos the overlay looks slightly brushed in effect, however it is not as noticeable in real life, perhaps the effect of the flash?

Looks great. Do you have a link to the ebay seller and would you be willing to share how much you paid?

The seller on E-Bay was solar_signa in Canada who makes them.
You may have to contact him to get one listed and if i remember correctly it was around £65 delivered?

EDIT: I looked for awhile, and couldn't fund a replacement bezel. Couldn't find a way to fix the bezel. All of the bezels were only sold with the shifter assembly.
I finally bought a new assembly (about $450) and sold off the old one on Ebay ($100).

BUT!: The guy with the chrome replacement's website finally responded. https://www.solarsigna.com/product/j...um-trim-plate/

His trimplate is $105. Wish I'd found him earlier. If you're successful buying one, please let others know.

Is there anyone making this in black or a 3D printed black overlay ? I'd be interested in seeing if anyone has been able to mock and print one up on a 3D printer ... Mine has got another little peel and would love to be able to just use a standard thin black printed overlay to lay right over it.

People have been looking for this for awhile. Even a black plastic adhesive overlay would likely do a great job, unless the chrome is damaged. The silver one is the only one I've seen that seems to address the problem.

I haven't really gotten into any3D printing, but maybe someone else on the forum would like to try to come up with something ... I'd be up seeing what it comes out like

I purchased this aluminum overlay last year and it’s very nice, high quality. It looks better than the original black and ties in well with the chrome.

Now that I've finished the Mr12V project, I'm bringing this one back to life.
All the above links are dead.

My 2008 XKR Portfolio J-Shifter has some bumps and bruises I'd love to clean up.
Read the main 6 threads on this and decided this one had the most useful info.

I have two issues.
The inside of the J-Shifter gate, as you will see below, has a chunk broken off next to the D. Obvious plastic underneath.
Then, all over the black, including the traction button, bits and pieces flaking off. Way worse than any of the pics folks posted above.

Now, the overlay solution sounds and really does look great, but keeping this rare gem original (or the parts to restore to original) is my primary goal.
So placing a giant sticker on top I'd think would do more damage removing down the road.

I'd say I am stuck waiting forever checking ebay for an entire assembly that is near mint and swapping it.
And none of the ones currently on ebay are much better than mine, certainly none perfect.

Has anyone come up with better solutions since the above thread?
Like a flat paint that can be applied while covering the gear indicators so they don't get painted?
