If you have an extra iphone charger, you can use that as well. It both works the music and it charges the phone. That's what i have been using.

I purchased one on Amazon for about $30. It works well with the music but didn't charge the phone (iPhone 4, 5 and 5S were all tried). Frustrated, I sprung for the $87 one from the dealer and it works great. I got my $30 back from the amazon vendor by the way. If your time is money, I recommend going straight for the dealer product and save yourself a lot of messing around.

The vendor sold you an old chord made for the iPhone models 3 and earlier. (My 2010 came with the same one.) you need a charging adapter like the one by Scosche to use this chord for charging newer phones (another 30 bucks or so). If anyone sees a Jag adapter chord for sale make sure it's from MY2011 or newer so that it works directly with the iPhone 4+ models. I just use the adapter because I already had the chord.

I think you're right even though it was specifically advertised for MY12+. I did a lot of research on those differences before I purchased it. I thought about the Scoshe and others and decided at that point I'd only be a few bucks away from the dealer cable. So one refund and a trip to the dealer later, and all is good.

I recently bought a dealer cable for my 2010XK and still needed the Scosche adapter to charge the phone. It's not that big a deal since I also needed the Apple lightning adapter for my iPhone 5s. I got the Apple one that has a bit of a pigtail so it's easier to plug into the phone with the case on. So I have Jag cable to Scosche to Apple adapter.
