Default Jaguar shut out

Has anyone ever experienced a complete shut out from their vehicle

Both key fobs weren't working that is to lock /unlock the doors and when placing the fob in the centre console nothing happened

I left the car and returned with a booster pack about two hours later, whilst in the driveway I pressed the key fob and saw that it was working again and it also started up fine

Any ideas

Did the car battery go flat? Or did the remotes just stop working?

Cheapest easiest DIY thing to do first is to replace the CR2032 batteries in both Smartkeys. Make sure those batteries are fresh, with expiration dates after 2020. That way you rule out a weak fob battery as being the cause of the problem. If it doesn't happen again, problem solved - bad battery. Worth a try.

A cold weak battery can regain some strength if it warms up in your pocket.

Don't think it was the key fob battery as I was still unable to start car with key fob in console so that rules out the fob

It's a communication issue the vehicle must have had with the fob/ecu I guess

It sounds like you may be another victim of JTB00147:

VIN: B00001 - B32964
Model Year: 2007 - 2009

CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation: An issue has been identified where after returning to the vehicle less than 10 minutes after locking, the customer is unable to unlock the vehicle with the remote handset and, after using the mechanical key to enter the vehicle, the engine will not crank. After 10 minutes the vehicle will recover and operate normally. This may be caused by a software issue with the Central Junction Box (CJB) and Auxiliary Junction Box (AJB).

The solution is to update the CJB and AJB firmware.
