I believe the 'divorce' process requires the Jag diagnostic system

Old thread but I am also having a remote problem that I haven't found a fix for yet; Just bought an '09 XK with one remote. The guy was using it in the docking station and told me that it just needed a battery. Got home and replaced the battery. No joy. No message on the dash so I opened it up and had a close look. I found that the contact that "hooks" around the battery and makes contact had been pushed back and wasn't making contact with the battery. Probably done when someone hamhandedly closed the case. Anyway, I straitened it and closed it up. Now my XK recognizes the remote and allows me to start the car without putting it into the dock.

My problem is that the remote doesn't activate anything else; door locks, unlock, hatchback, etc. Is there something that needs to be reset after the battery replace? Any other suggestions?

Hmmm?...by "dummy" key, are you referring to the "cut key", that happens to be "un-cut"?

if you are talking about a 1999 XK, you are on the wrong forum. You will get better answers on the xk8/xkr forum.

Hey Ron,
First off, congratulations on the new car, you'll surely enjoy it. Secondly, you probably need to have the remote fob reprogrammed. The dealer will charge a fortune while an independent locksmith who has the ability to program Jaguar keys will be less than half the cost.

BUT the car DOES recognise this remote if it is docked in the car (in the armrest cubby); so this indicates to me that the programming has not changed. I can see nothing wrong at all with the circuit board; the battery is properly mounted (+ down), the case is properly assembled. But none of the buttons work. As it is, it will function as an emergency back-up if docked, but is otherwise useless.
Any ideas?
Since the key works just fine when docked, but not when undocked, and you just replaced the battery, I'm going to guess that either the replacement battery is dead or you put it in upside down. Try flipping it over, even though you are confident that it's already installed correctly, and then try another battery purchased from a different store.

I know that you can swap out the exterior shell of a Jaguar key with no issues because I just did it with my 2011 XKR.

Ralph, this is about my 2009 XK (X150)

I bought a new shell and replaced the guts of the old remote into the new shell. I can lock and unlock the door from the handle and the car starts fine with the key in my pocket. Just the dang buttons on the remote that are problematic. I'll try to remove and then reinstall a new battery.

Maybe its the new shell that is the problem. Maybe pressing the buttons on the shell are not activating the switches on the remote's circuit board.
You could try taking the shell off, and pressing the buttons directly on the board.

I put a new shell on my fob and had to manipulate it a bit to get the buttons on the shell to make contact with the proper "innards".

This could be my problem. The new shell definitely took some work to assemble. The car is at a body shop having the front bumper repainted so I won't know until next week when I get the car back.

I got a new key and fob off ebay the car is at the dealer and they have programmed it for me but apparently it caused problems for both when used in the dock, so there giving a spare battery just in case. I'll write more when I get it back.

Picked up the car both key fobs working. The dealer charged $80 for programming only need to go to get the blank key cut.
For some reason programming the new fob stopped the old one working in the docking station for low battery but will keep a spare battery in the car and be good to go.

I have the same problem..."battery low" on info dash, so like a good doobie I go to my local battery store, buy myself a shiny new battery and wa-la...key fob is completely dead. Buy two more batteries, replace it every which way and nothing...deader than the proverbial doornail. Works in the dock but outside, unrecognized.
Sorry, I have read this thread back to front and what I come away with is any way I slice this pie, I have to reprogram the key...either indie of jag dealer the choice is mine...I hate this new fangled technocrap. The ghost of Lucas lives...
As I learned long ago with my first Triumph Spitfire when I had to pony up $150 for a new alternator and when I complained about the cost, the parts mgr said, "You drive like a sport, you pay like a sport,"

Default Used key fobs cannot be . . .

My experience is that previously used key fobs cannot be fully re-programmed to a new/used/different vehicle. Wirelessly the key fob may work, but it will not work in the slot. There is a difference in how it works wirelessly and how it works in the slot. The slot programming is a one & done thing; wirelessly there can be multiple programings.

Had this experience and was told that once a key fob is "burned" with the digital info to a vehicle it cannot be changed to work in the slot. The key may work wirelessly but not in the slot. The slot reads ROM (read only memory which cannot be changed) digital info while the wireless action reads RAM (random access memory which can be changed). One digital key signature can be changed, the other cannot.

Had to have all my keys replaced and spent multiple days and trips to the dealership to get the issue resolved. It was so involved that there was talk by the techs that the only fix would be replacing the entire dash complex that interacts with the key fobs in order to get the issue fixed. In the end, the issue was resolved by the dealership providing brand new key fobs (that had never been mated to another vehicle) and programming them to PURRRLL. The other key fobs ceased to work in the slot though still worked wirelessly.

Changing out a battery should be simple and the fob should function without issue (changed my 2004 MB fob battery on more then one occasion without incident). The bigger question is why does it sound like some jag dealerships are able to reprogram without issue and some sound like they're trying to land on the moon..."multiple trips"..."remove the dash"!!!!
Reprogramming should not be that big a deal. I can deal with dealerships charging a premium to reprogram if they want (short sighted in my opinion) but the actual process of reprogramming shouldn't be treated as a black art.
Just venting...probably 'cause I'm down to one fob now. Thanks for listening.

I have read through this thread, and have seen several bad and good experiences... I recently purchased the XKR and it only came with one key, which works fine. I want to get a second key and get it programmed, without screwing up the original key's capability. I have found, on eBay, new aftermarket key fobs with uncut entry keys for ~$70. Do these work? Assuming the local Jag dealer will program it, what are the risks?

Thanks for any help from those of you who have been through the minefield..

I have had both good and bad with purchasing ebay fobs. One has worked, the other couldn't be programmed. Fortunately on the one that couldn't be programmed, the locksmith who was doing the programming had plenty of Jaguar key fobs, and for even less money I purchased the fob from him and had him program it as well. I returned the ebay faulty one and was refunded. You might want to call around to the locksmiths that can do Jaguar programming and ask them if they have fobs available. And by the way XF fobs work on our XKs as well, you never know what you might find.

Thanks much. I have not been able to locate an auto locksmith in my area, so may have to go to the dealer. There is a non-dealer Jag repair shop in Atlanta, about 2 hours drive, but not sure if they do keys.
