Also, with self-sales, you've really got to factor in the hassle factor-- people who show up, drive it, then lowball, or people that PROMISE they "really want the car" but don't show and don't even cancel. Selling a car like this is a hassle. And I second the notion that AutoTrader is the best forum for these cars, and if you follow it for a while you'll get a feel for what yours is worth. Understand that any of these places you see selling cars similar to yours would pay you 40-60% of what they're selling a similar car for.
In addition, your car is more than twelve years old. It's hard, and expensive, for a dealer to finance your car to a buyer. Carmax used to not list cars more than eight years old, which became 10 years, which may now be 12 years, but by any measure I don't think they'd sell your car. Which means they'd offer you a price that would allow them to make $$ reselling the car at a wholesale auction.
but here's the most important thing you said: LIFE IS SHORT. Sure, list it on here and AutoTrader for few weeks-- you might get lucky. But if you don't sell, bring it to CarMax, take your beating (and your check) and move on.

Agree on the headache of self sales having done many. Car Max will make a prelim offer on line. Actual visit determines the final offer. Out here, CM is consistently offering highest prices.

Just consider trading it in on the replacement car. Zero hassle, and the sales tax savings on the replacement car will, in the end, likely be better for you then Carmax or any other wholesale offer. Also, you drive the car there, you drive away in the new one. Doesn't get much more hassle free then that. Assuming of course you are purchasing the replacement car from a dealer.

I'm a bit out of sorts. I bought my beautiful 20k mile 2011 XKR Coupe hoping to get my wife involved with my love of performance cars. She required an automatic. Since she's a London girl I thought a Jag would fill the bill. Plus, I've always loved the way they look. She drove the car twice. The second time, she was pulled over for 75 in a 45 mph zone. Somehow, she talked her way into a warning. But she has refused to drive the car since. "It's too bloody fast and I'm afraid to park it anywhere". I have what will be a limited number of years where I can comfortably drive a manual car. That's what I'm yearning for. If she's not going to share in the driving experience, there is not as much incentive to keep the car. I can buy another when I'm older and need an automatic. I would prefer that it go to someone here who will appreciate and love the car. I'd rather not let it go to a dealer on BaT who will just flip it. I've watched the listings here and they just don't seem to move or turn over. Am I stuck with BaT? Any thoughts? I feel like a traitor, but life is short and I want what I want.

I appreciate your thoughts. It's not an emergency and I can store it for the winter, but I like the idea of testing the market with CarMax. I don't know if the market will be any stronger next year. I'm thinking someone would like to have the car for the remainder of the summer, so I'll investigate BaT (where I bought it) and C&B as well ("it's free").

Agreed. Signed up just to look for info and classifieds... tons of cars all over autotrader and such but having a one on one convo with a seller here is favorable!
