Default Lumpy shifts when cold

Is this a "feature"? I find that when I leave the house and am driving very gently because of school zones and traffic, the shift quality is not all that great. Once the car is warmed up it's fine. Even when cold, if I am able to drive a bit more briskly then the shifts seem smoother than the combo of cold and gentle. I have noticed this with other cars, too.

It's more pronounced in my manual transmission cars than the automatics I own, but I'd agree -- colder is rougher.
