More Supercharger Whine
Morning Gents,
I have a 5.0 XKR and would like a bit more supercharger whine, my dad has a 4.2 and the supercharger whine on that is a lot more noticeable than on the 5.0. Is there anything that can be done? TIA

Hi,
I don't think a thin bit of plastic will muffle noise that much. My Dad's XKR has everything still on like mine, i thought it would be the design of the inlet pipes?

Your dad's supercharger whine is a big hat on a small cowboy. It was a consolation prize.
You were given the ability to blow through 2 traffic lights while aiming for 1. Revel in it, you dont have time to pause for the whine.
It actually makes a little bit of a difference. Not a huge one, but hey, it's a two minute task and free. Give it a go!

Luckily I'm single, so no such whine exists!

Yeah, something about those ridiculously shaped and routed intake pipes that these things have. They look like squids with tumors. Jaguar took a LOT of time and effort to nearly eliminate that whine.
Throw a couple of those aforementioned cones up at the top front with the MAF sensors, and you'll hear all the whine you want.

There is a member on here that made a set of sweet intake tubes for his 5.0 supercharged....I believe he said his car screams now....and I think he was going to sell them.... sorry I can't direct you to that thread...I have the 4.2 and put on a smooth aftermarket tube and mine is a lot louder, with a better low end...more air in I suppose

Mina gallery and yes, they are on my car...I would figure yours would be very similar...there are others I am sure....shop around some....the MAF location is critical...so any aftermarket should emphasize good maf response
You might pm member Caldoofy....he makes one for the 4.2....dont know about the 5.0 though
I rode in an XF-RS with cones and it sounded like a very loud electric drill to the point where it completely drowned out all other engine noises even at WOT. The owner bought it like that and put the OEM intake in almost as soon as he got it home. But cones under the hood is a good way to lose power. JLR did a fantastic job with the intake design and the snorkels that end in front of the heat exchangers is a perfect example of a weather proof cold air intake. If it were me after just noise, I'd cut all the helmholtz resonators off the intake tubes with the understanding that it'd be an expensive proposition to reverse and that I'd still be losing power, albeit not as much as if I threw some cones at the end of the pipes.
Alternately, if noise is what you're after, you can just wait until the SC coupler starts rattling. It's not a fault; it's a feature!
*edit- taking the engine cover off won't make it louder, but several (myself included) have noticed a slight reduction in coolant temps as a result. I'm guessing it's partially from the heat not being held in any more, and maybe a slight increase in airflow over the top of the engine. Pure speculation on that, though.
