Default Nav unit problem

I "stupidly" stopped my nav update and now I can't get the nav to function. I tried reloading the disc and I can hear it pinning but nothing on the screen. The Nav button is greyed out and doesn't function when touched. I'm guessing that I fried the nav disc unit. I did disconnect the battery and touched - + cables together still nothing. I found a unt on Ebay and is replacing the unit just a plug and play? Thanks

Per the 07-09 service manual:

G841057t21 : NO RESPONSE TO PRESSING NAVIGATION MENU
1. Check that the engine was not turned 'OFF' during a navigation software update.
• Was the engine turned 'OFF' during a navigation software update?
-> Yes
Check the correct map disc is inserted into the Navigation Control Module (NCM). Start the engine and allow to idle for 15 minutes Turn the engine 'OFF', and then start the engine again. Verify that the navigation screen displays. Navigation was in the program update mode.

Sean W's steps are to remedy your situation. Try them and report back.
When you first attempted you should have had either the engine running or a battery charger connected. Sometimes the Update takes 30+ minutes, and that's a drain on any battery.

I did have the CTEK connected. Should that be enough to keep the battery charged? Will try Sean W recommendation tomorrow and post the results. Thanks

Sean W THANKS!! Let it run for the 15 minutes with the original disc and all's well. Now to update should I install the new disc and start the car and let it run while it is updating or can I just turn the ignition on while the battery is connected to the CTEK? Thanks again to all for all the help.

You're welcome. Just an FYI, it's helpful to everyone if you go to your signature page and add your year and model there, then it will show up on all posts.

Glad it worked out

Unhappy

I've found the Navigation System in my '09 XK to be a bit awkward to operate. If I want to reset it on the road during a trip I need to stop the engine. My portable Garmen GPS is much more responsive to my needs. I suppose that I am just used to 2017 technology, the older unit just dosen't do it as well. As far as an update, what good is an updated map without the updated system to go with it??

Do you mean cancel guidance? If so have you seen the attached instructions in the handbook?

But I need to shut off the engine first. Not convenient. Passenger can not operate it while the car is in motion.

I can cancel guidance while in motion, without shutting off the engine. I've never tried to enter a destination while in motion because it's distracting and unsafe, just like texting while driving. And I rarely have a passenger.

Yep, its a stupid ‘safety’ feature that won’t allow a destination entry while driving, even if it is the passenger doing it.
Just bought an add-on for my Lexus that is supposed to bypass that ‘feature’.

Interesting. My MY 2012 does not gray out anything while in motion. I just have to hit the Accept button at the beginning and it lets me control everything, including destination/address entry while in motion.

So possibly the newer Volvo Discs will permit it.

I'll have the newest Volvo disk and will try it and let you know. Waiting for the next nice day.

Worst case you should just have to pull over but on both my '07 and '10 XKR I could cancel guidance while moving.

Other options were greyed out unless I was stationary but, I have just checked, and on my current one I can tap on the map which brings up a button that says Change Route and if I select that I can cancel the guidance from that screen as well.

Are all the options greyed out when you press the menu button on yours while you are moving?

Yup, tried it today and the new Volvo disc allows destination entry while in motion! Perhaps Volvo has voice activated nav which might allow input while in motion.

No matter though, it is a plus since I only use nav on trips where my wife would input addresses. Kind of an inadvertant upgrade for the XK!

pwpacp,

After the Volvo update, do you retain the female British voice?

No, only the US English female voice. When I put the Jag disc in she returned but with the new disc back in she was gone again. Small price for faster response, newer maps, and the ability to make entries on the fly.
