It took a little while mainly based on my schedule (and my son's) but the top, cables, and headliner are replaced,
The headliner along the sides along the trim work is not as close as I would like, about a 1" gap.(will continue to work on that.
I still may tweak the outer cover at the sides to make them slightly tighter.
This was probably the toughest part of the installation trying to keep it fitted tight and "pop-riveting" the carrier and the outer cover to the frame, took three attempts.
The final closure at the rear was also a little tough to stack the headliner, the retainer the outer cover, and the final retainer/weather stripping, that took 2 times.
The weather seal from the outer cover to the rear weather seal is a finicky attachment in a curve, so it was just cumbersome to get it into place and maintain the attachment.
I've managed to get great support from a GAHH Support Tech on a couple details.
I did make one significant mistake (not critical) with mis-locating one strap that pulls inward to create the fold as the top goes into the compartment,
Since I have opened and closed the top several times the fold is sort of "remembering itself" and is less of an issue.
But I have a couple of possible solutions.
Waiting for the RaggTopp kit to come in but got the brush and it really works a lot better than the "horse hair" type brush.
Dana,
Yippee, you did it! But it wasn't quite as easy as you thought it would be.
If I tried to do it, the money I saved would have been spent on physical therapy and pain relievers as my moving parts haven't accepted lubrication for years.
I understand your motivation, as there's nothing more satisfying than a job well done. It looks great!
One is enough!
But I like to share my learnings.
Actually, the workshop manual has all the details, but doesn't lend itself to an easy to follow sequence.
Based on that I'm working on a document (WORD/PDF) that will do that.
Basically enough info for a one to determine if this qualifies as a DIY project.
It will contain:
My research on tops & headliners.
My experience, including pictures, warnings, extra notes/details.
And a huge disclaimer! "AT YOUR OWN RISK AND EXPENDITURES"
And a health alert: "PRONE TO MUSCULAR ACHES PAINS WITH OCASSIONAL HEADACHES"
I hope it will qualify as a "STICKY THREAD" .
