Default This noise is driving my crazy!

Hey guys,

Can anyone offer me advice on this noise? It sounds like it’s coming from INSIDE the car, but it can clearly be heard outside too.

It started as a creeak- as I would back down the driveway at an angle. Now it’s happening on speed bumps and small bumps when turning.

I installed new end links and noticed no difference. I also sprayed silicone spray on many of the bushings (control arms etc..). No difference in noise.

My 2012 XKR has 32k Miles. The rear shocks were replaced under CPO warranty a couple of years ago.

Do you think this is a shock failure noise? How about a spring isolator or shock mount?

I jacked the car up and put it on jack stands. I then used a jack to move the left wheel up and down.. I did not hear the noise.

I can also stand in the hatch and jump up and down and I don’t hear the noise (the suspension doesn’t move much).

I have taken rear seats out, wedged towels between seats and side panels.. even held window to ensure it wasn’t a trim noise. It’s something with the suspension and it’s driving me nuts!

Thanks!
Joe

I understand your frustration, because annoying squeaks and rattles are often difficult if not impossible to fix.

If you can't fix it, turn the music up louder and enjoy the ride!

yea that would drive me nuts (I'm a tad OCD)

Hard to hear your video clearly where I'm at right now but could it be the window seal squeaking? I'd assume not because the window seal is pretty tight on our doors but worth a try... .

I tried to hold the window seal... and wedge some stuff in there to see if the noise changes. It didn’t change.

I’ll get some video outside the car to see if that helps. It’s very loud.

Thanks,
Joe

Sounds like a dry rubber/poly bushing squeak to me... But hard to tell though video... I would be checking all rubber bushings in that area, since our cars are know for them deteriorating. You could probably spray different bushings one at a time with a lubricant and do a test drive around the block until you find the problem... Just a guess,,,

Sounds like suspension to me. Almost like a poly bushing instead of rubber. Is the same sound on the passenger side.

I just sprayed silicone spray way up on top of strut. Noise is gone! It must have been the spring isolator making that noise.... or maybe the strut mount.

Installing new springs in a week.. I’ll take a look at it then.

For something extremely difficult to hear unless the car is in motion.......your best option is to purchase, rent, or borrow a set of chassis ears. There is usually a set of at least 4 and you can place them anywhere you think the noise might be coming from. Look into it and let us know if you think it might be an option for you. I had a creak coming from under my 2000 Passat when it was 6 months old and this was the only way to find it. Turned out to be an engine mount.. I'm not certain how it works with interior or trim items but it's worth looking in to. Good luck.

If you haven't already, check your Sway Bar Mounting Bushings as well as the sway bar drop links. Really sounds like a squeaky bushing somewhere.

Hope that helps,

Dave

So the real question is what has changed for the bushing to make noise?
