And former military pilots, its the whole power to weight ratio thing, and they love Mazda for the rotary engine (in RX7), which is still in use in aviation.

I would have no problem with a Miata/MX-5 - great cars. One in that Mazda red will do fine thanks

Have a friend who bought a new MX-5 (in red) in the spring of 2017, because he had missed the order dead line for a Porsche in the fall of 2016. In 2017 he got his order in for a 2018 Porsche, trading the Mazda in on it in the spring of 2018.
He said the MX-5 was fun (manual transmission), but it just wasn’t a ‘Porsche’.
I cut him some slack, he was born in Germany and is getting back to his roots.

Not really a fair comparison - I expect the Porsche was 3 times the price?. The fun with the Mazda is that you have fun at sane speeds. Most modern high-performance cars don't really come to life on the legal side of any speed limits.

Thats it.
Baby boomers buy a Miata to remember the fun in a similar car from their youth.
You buy a Porsche to relive the promise of the Hitler youth.

I think the Miata is more like a Triumph Spitfire or an Alpha Romeo than a Porsche. Tiny two seater fun car. It is a great car for what it is.

Mazda is bringing back the Wankel engine. It will be something.
Not my cup of tea, but if they put a R at the end of it, it will be.
