Default Possible Bad Spoiler?

So my rear spoiler comes in and its an actual Jaguar part#C2P17584, and it looks like there is a 1/4 inch gap between the spoiler and the decklid. All the holes etc line up perfectly. You think this is a bad part from Jaguar? What is your experience with the fit out of the box?

Thank you guys in advance!

Any chance it will get better when you tighten the bolts?

Unlikely. I just installed the same spoiler on mine and it took a bit, don't go by the holes, that was my mistake as well.

What did you do to get it to fit?

Mine had to be shifted a bit more forward than I thought was right, but it fits perfectly. There are 5 screws and 2 clips at the furthest ends plus the 3M moulding tape.

Was yours also a Jaguar part? I find it odd that an part made by Jaguar fits so poorly, I'm probably sending it back as the body shop is horrified that a Jaguar made part fits that badly.

Sorry to hear about the problem BUT, it is far from unusual. I have worked (as a hobby) with composites and they do have a strong tendency to change their shapes during the curing process that can last days. Particularly on pieces that are structurally long and unsupported, like a spoiler. Still, you'd think that Jaguar would have it figured out.

I once built a 7lbs carbon hood to replace the 51lbs steel engine cover on my Lambo. I was too impatient to wait for the full curing with the hood on the car. I took it to the body shop for painting where they placed it on a cardboard box, painted it and put it outside. By next morning the hood looked like a half-closed umbrella, its front-back-sides sagging for not being supported. Thankfully, putting it on the car immediately pulled it back, given that the composite was still "green".

Or, when I ordered a new glass front clip for my RX-7. When originally fitted, it had nearly 0.5" gaps from the rest of the bodywork. I had to cut all mounting flanges, reshape the whole thing, build-up new flanges and now it looks perfect. Just the nature of composite behaviour. You can have a perfect mold to build out of but, the curing is that's going to get you.

I would also send it back and hope that the next one is better. Good luck.

Albert

Thanks for the insight Albert I'm going to visit the body shop over lunch and see really how bad it is, I just hate having to order another one all over again I know they can "make" it fit but I rather not wrestle parts on to cars.

I just went by the shop and it looks like they got it to fit the way jag wants it to fit... that includes a 1/8 inch bump up to the spoiler surface.

1/8" gap is about right

Are you planning to fit the rest of the Speed Pack bodykit?

Yes the dealer installed the front splitter for me for free and I'm looking at a carbon centered rear diffuser like the one on the R-S. I'm still undecided about the side sills and the XKR-S has no side sills and still looks good.

MaxiumA:

Since you have gone this far with the body changes, I would add the side sills, which really provide the "slick" look to the body package.

They really provide that racing look. Take some photos of your work and post them for us to see.

Compared to my XKR the side sills are larger on the XKR-S, however they are not as large at the speed pack side sills.

The sills have an aerodynamic benefit; they're part of the overall 25% reduction in lift that the Speed Pack kit provides. Of course, you're still limited to 155 anyway, so perhaps that's not relevant.

I like the look of the Speed Pack sills, especially on a black/dark car, but that's a matter of taste. As Richzak says, they complete the overall 'lowered' look. If the R-S sills are smaller, you could go for those instead, as a halfway compromise.

I'll probably end up adding them when I get the rear diffuser. I'll take some more pictures of the car when I get it back hopefully Friday. Of course it has to go back to the detailers as its filthy at the moment.

Think you guys talked me back into the side sills So I'll order them tomorrow and have them installed with the diffuser.

Your spoiler is fine..i had to have mine replaced because mine warped and the seal came out from up underneath. It is not flush to the truck but sits up a weeee bit. Now as to why my 175 like spoiler on the 2012 black pack XKR warped??? anyone? anyone? It was replaced under warranty after i had it replaced under my own coin and turned it in to the dealership stating warped was not normal wear.

You are right I had to switch loaner cars at the dealer yesterday and noticed that the new XKRs with the spoiler had the same lip. My bodyshop handles a lot of high end cars so when he see something thats not flush he panics. Although I'm glad to know hes that picky.
