PSA: Replace your 2 piece lug nuts
 

Hi All, Just a public service announcement. This is the second time I have run into trouble with the stock 2 piece lug nuts on my Jag. I swapped out my front brake pads to ceramic this weekend and as luck would have it 4 out of 5 lug nuts on one wheel came off with a breaker bar and 19mm impact socket.The last one popped the cap right off the nut. What followed was an afternoon of part/tool store runs. I finally got it off but this 2 piece lug design is just not a good one. I do have other cars and swapped them out. So I did the same on the Jag.
I was lucky and happy this was part of a planned maintenance. So a work of advice, before getting stuck with a flat and no easy way to get a lug with a popped cap off, swap out your 2 piece lug nuts for one piece lugs.

Just buy a set of stock Toyota ones and a 22mm (I think) socket / lug wrench. They shine up nice too.

Yup. First thing I did on mine. Not by choice or previous knowledge though. Bought car, tire went flat 1 week later in garage. Found nail. Attempted to remove wheel. last lug nut stripped. Noticed the shitty cap. Ripped cap off and removed last lug. Went on forum and found the solution: replace all lugs. Bought Toyota lugs and new lug nut wrench and socket. Slept well since ;)

Any links or part numbers for the Toyota parts ?

Gorilla makes a set specific for Jaguars: 73138J for chrome and 73138JBC for black chrome.

The difference between the lug nuts for Toyota and Jaguar is the length of the shank. On Toyota/Lexus lug nuts the shank is .550" inches and on the Jaguar it's .500"
While .05" doesn't seem like a lot, it's a problem if the nut bottoms out on the hub.

I had order some solid lug nuts previously, but the were 13/16 vs 3/4 (19mm). The Gorilla product looks more correct. Assuming they are 19mm.

Does anyone have experience with the lug nuts from West Coast Accessories? On EBay they are solid, still only 3/4 inch (maybe 19mm) and about half the price of Gorilla.

If your OEM Jaguar 2-piece lug nuts have not been buggered, there is no reason to replace them with 1-piece nuts. Just make sure that the tire guy always uses your OEM Jaguar socket. This is from the thread referred to by Shemp in his Post #5, above.

For those of us that purchased cars previously owned by others with no control over who or what tool was used on the lug nuts, I think these are reasonable alternatives. The link is in my previous pose, they are solid and I like them better than the Toyota/Lexus ones as they are 19mm so no need for a 11/16 socket AND the price isn't bad.

Those look like the junk Dorman's from the auto parts place "help" rack but are priced less so I'm going with Chinese knock off's. Wonder how long the chrome will stick around?

You are right, they are junk. There really is no good solution. Those will work in USA, but not in places where rust and moisture is constant. They will rust your wheels as sure as the sun will come out again.
This is why Jaguar has a good solution, they are not completely stupid, they too can buy Chinese junk, but used expensive hardened steel (which cant be chrome plated, or plated period due to hardness) and cover it with a soft metal.
Most folks in USA dont realize that you can shape the outer cover by using the correct socket and hammering it.

Also buy one of these and keep the 19mm socket in your glovebox. For one it will prevent wheel from being scratched up, but its a polite way of making sure the pimple faced dummy at the tire shop knows what socket size to use.

Depends on the damage. I was able to get 4 off by hammering on the right socket size. The other was too mangled and the lug was too tight so I had to ruin it to get it off. Either way, good design or bad, the last thing I want to find out on the side of the highway is the lug caps are loose. So off they came!

And yes, buy the correct socket and I also bought a telescopic socket wrench. That stock wrench is also quite weak IMO.

I am totally with you. I did not replace mine due to inability to find any high quality manufacturer, or ones that were approved to American fastener standards. But I looked, found one that makes them from aluminum alloy, I was tempted due to weight savings.

Good idea on the telescoping wrench, I may just carry a breaker bar, you cant strip the teeth on a toothless creature. Been meaning to start a thread about emergency tool bag items all XK owners should carry, especially the grand tourers; like cling wrap, the right size allen wrench, spare battery for remote. (and of course your Gin Richard)

I reported this on the other thread I believe but this is the one I bought. I used it to rotate the tires on the Yukon. Seems strong enough, Cheap and it fits inside the tire compartment in the XK (not in the original moulded location though as it's a little longer). I wrapped it in a towel to keep it from rattling around.

I'm more a fan of this one. I prefer to bar to be 90 degrees to the wheel. Regarding the sockets Q&C mentions, I believe they help preserve the wheel paint but don't think they protect the lug nut?
