Default Quick non-XK question for the team

So a friend of mine just bought a Chevy Cruze and it wasn't until he got home that he realized that the car does not have cruise control. He reached out to me because he did a little online research and wants to buy an aftermarket cruise control system and I'm the only "car guy" he knows and, he asks, can I install it for him?

My question: this just seems to me like an asking-for-trouble bad idea. Has anyone done this and is it a straightforward install? Am I correct in urging him to stay away? Given that he bought the car new, will it void his warranty?

Thanks as always...

After market CC in older vehicles was a pretty simple installation. As for the post ECU cars I don't have much knowledge on what a after market kit would look like. Whether it would void warranty I would check on that 1st. The correct way would be to install the OEM system but my bet is that would not only be a challenge but would be expensive. As for me I would not get involved because you are effecting the drivability and safety of the car.

Yes, a simple install, but the integration would suffer. The older units had a largish control box which clamped to the turn signal stalk and it was horrid. Where would the controls be mounted? Any suitable locations available?

I bet the dealer could install it for minimal cost since he just bought it.

Thanks all. He feels like an idiot but says "who even checks for cruise control anymore," and I agree. I think the idea of having the dealer install is the shot.

That's the best choice. He'll need a new steering wheel/insert and then some programming, I'd suppose. The required wiring would probably be there anyway, to cut costs for logistics on harnesses.

And I love that a car called "Cruz" doesn't have "cruise" control standard...

I have been through that question on Toyotas, the new Corollas don't even have cruise control, and lots of people did the same things as you...don't feel alone. Plenty of pissed off buyers. Now I am not a GM guy, but after many discussions about this on a Toyota forum, it is almost impossible and very VERY expensive, I am talking $3,000. Again, not knowing near as much about Chevy Cruze, I don't know if the same applies but I think it does. On a Corolla you have to change the ECU, change entire steering column, different throttle body and so much more

Yes this can be added for about $500 from the dealer. give your local dealer a call. They have to order the part and then program the car.

The base F-Type didn't come with cruise control in the UK until at least 2016 either. It was a £350 option in 2014.

I used to include cruise control as a requirement for any vehicle I owned. Kinda like power windows and doors and an AC. It was just mandatory. Then one day, I realized that the little commuter car I got to drive back and forth to work every day didn't have cruise control. That was after about a year of owning it. How did I miss that? Turns out, I never use the cruise. I drive a big F250 across the country towing a camper behind it, sometimes 16 hours a day to get to my next job location. I haven't used the cruise in the truck since I got it. I guess I just prefer to actually be in control of my own vehicle.

Not having cruise control isn't as bad as you think. Try it a while and you might find that you don't need it as badly as you thought.

Even though most of my driving is around town I use my adaptive cruise pretty much all the time, mainly so that I don't have to worry about whether I am speeding or not.

I tend to use it like standard cruise control though because the adaptive part is a bit too twitchy around town.

I gotta say I use CC every time I drive regardless if in town or the open road. I also have it in my truck and use it a lot. I don't think I'd buy a car without it. I don't like the ACC though as it is a pain when driving on interstates. Just personal choice.

Me, too, but my wife thinks I'm nuts. That's why I married her. 😁

Sometimes it is, like when some buffoon squeezes in front of you and your brakes hit HARD.

Hobby for a troll, when driving on multi lane roads recognize cars that have adaptive cruise and drivers that aren't paying attention. The troll then very very very slowly reduce their speed in front of them.

See how slow you can go before they look up and notice.

That's EXACTLY how my brother gets slowpokes out of the fast lane!!
Gets in front of them and slows down, untill they finally pull over-- then he guns it! He clears the lane for everyone!
