Angry rear glass dropped need new top

Sorry to say rear glass dropped on 2011xk vert. no one will repair it and private shop and dealers have said top has to be replaced. Not under warranty but Jaguar USA is looking into it. Vehicle has only 35K and stays in air conditioned garage here in east central Florida. One dealer said its not the heat but usage of the top up and down, I say that what a vert is for start car top down. One estimate from private is 2K special order mineral green and glass guaranteed. Waiting for two estimates from dealer. Oh well the price of a fine auto.

For those of us that still own a convertible, please keep us informed on how well the deal goes as well as installation.

Although the window dropped out, what was the condition of the top itself?

How about you just sew in a flexible plastic window like they have in a Miata? My old bmw z3 had a flexible plastic window and it held up for 15 years.

Don't think it would work, as the window is glass, and the 'welder' works with plastic.

Maybe an old Miata, but I think the new ones use glass.

In response, the top is in excellent condition. Will keep you all posted as to final repair and what Jaguar USA does if anything. I am told the problem is that when the top goes up and down it flexes around the glass that's why no glue or sealant of any type will work so a new top with the glass already installed through a special process. I was told its like vulcanizing a tire. Will update.

A serviceable repair can usually be made with https://www.amazon.com/3M-08609-Wind.../dp/B000FW61EW. Note also the primer that should be used with this. Also see the 1st review on the Amazon link...it illustrates the type of clamps that are needed to facilitate an effective repair.

After a 48 hour cure, this is permanent. I have done mine and it is performing well. It is messy stuff and takes considerable time, care and prep to do a good job though.

An quality aftermarket replacement top is also available here : https://www.topsonline.com/model/Con...nvertible.html

Jaguar & Ferrari also had plastic rear windows, which invalidates your statement.

For anything built LATER than 1970, plastic rear windows are ghetto.

So before 1970 they were great but after 1970 they are ghetto. What exactly happened to make this so?

To the best of my knowledge there were no e-type drop heads only OTS, coupes and 2+2 coupes. the last year of production was 1974 for OTS and they were V-12's. Production of the 2+2s ended somewhat earlier, i'm unsure of the the MY.

Ohhh...I get it now. The OP's window fell out at 35K because of superior technology and manufacturing techniques. I am sure he is just filled with joy to know this.

Hi, sorry to hear about the window, but good to see that there are ready made replacement tops available, our 07 is showing its age but the window is still there, although the top has only been up twice since April.
The high temp + high humidity in Florida is bad news for some plastics and adhesives, we have an Audi A8 that spent 10 yrs there and the urethane in the headliner and door panels is letting go..
I don't think the lovely BMW Z8 is ever going to depreciate enough for me, and they have plastic windows, although not pvc and they shouldn't yellow, but they are urethane, so not sure about Florida..
Regards
