Default Steering wheel clock spring noise

My xkr 2008 has just been into jaguar main dealer as they diagnosed the clock spring as making a creek/squeak annoying noise.

After a long wait they told me it didn't sort the problem. Thankfully haven't charged but it needs to go back in when another part arrives.

Not exactly sure what the problem is now but they said it was a much longer job (around 3hrs) and the part is £150 alone with the labour on top. Bigger strip down of the steering column I think so assume it's another bearing further down?

Anyone comment on that? The car has suffered with being low mileage but weird that this would suffer after only 19k miles.

Hopefully this is the last thing to sort then properly start enjoying it!

The main dealer sorted my steering wheel creak out which im told wasnt the clock spring but another bearing (invoice only quotes part number and was told it was a bigger strip down job on steering column).

The thing is, it seems very light steering now even at high speeds. I would have thought the steering is progressive/speed sensitive? Is that right?

Obviously nice at low speeds but should it get heavier with speed? Could something not have been set right perhaps?

Appreciate comments! cheers

The squeak in the steering (which indeed sounds as though it comes from a spot very near the steering wheel) is from down in the innards and it has been an issue for years, but a benign one - other than the noise itself, it means nothing. The official Jaguar fix is not to replace parts but to add a special additive (that is a redundant statement, isn't it?) to the steering fluid - but there is a protocol for doing it. Your dealer should know about this.

Its the inner fire wall boot were the shaft exits the inside. Above pedals. Small screw drive and lude. Tiny opening and spray lube. Cheap fix.

Thanks for the input guys.
I did know about the lube additive and sure I mentioned it when the main dealer test drove it but they were sure it was the clock spring but were wrong.
i will get the part numbers from my invoice and let you know what they actually changed.
My question, is the PAS progressive so gets heavier with speed. It is definitely much lighter at low speeds and maybe still feels too light at higher speeds when you want to feel in control but hard to tell if heavier or not?
Could something have been done wrong or is it just me! Ha ha.
i guess could be just that it's got new parts?
