My idler pulley sounded exactly like the little squeaky mouse. I used to say, "Cat caught a mouse," every time I started her up. The ghostly sound, never heard that before, but I would associate it with the blower. But I have no basis for my suggestion other than gut instinct of working on cars for 34 years. Remove the blower belt and see if it still makes that sound.

Got the car back today. In the shop owner's opinion, the noise was too quiet to justify spending $1200 on fixing.

I think I will give your shop in Richmond a shot, perhaps in the summer. I am going on vacation to England and France in May, and I'd rather not spend a $1200 on an unnecessary car repair on a car that is rarely driven!

Well I decided that I can't just sit ALL of this nice weather out. I've committed to having a shop do the repair, and all the parts have been ordered. They are going to replace all the tensioners, pulleys and brackets on both belts, so that I should be trouble free for years to come.

 

The car is in the shop getting fixed!

Oddly enough the cat wasn't doing too much squealing on the way over, but I think one of the belt tensioners must be shot because when giving the car a lot of throttle (i.e., under load) there is a rattling sound which I interpret to be a tensioner that is rattling. At least that's what my hope is!

 

Will they be replacing the supercharger torsion isolator while doing the rest of the work?

I just got the car back. The squealing is gone! I did notice some pinging under certain conditions, but the gas is really old and I think she needs an Italian tuneup!

I had the guy save all the old parts, so I'll try to post some videos showing the condition of the old parts just so you guys can get an idea of what the condition of the original parts are like at 60k miles.

 

Agreed about the gas, our cars seem to be sensitive to octane levels.

It does seem like the pinging is pretty much gone.

I noticed in the parts they gave me (which included both supercharger and FEAD idler pulleys) that one was not ribbed. I assume this was the FEAD pulley as it was narrower. Interesting because the dealer claimed my car was outside the VIN range for the TSB and that I already had the updated pulleys.
