I am having an high temp issue. I have seen 224 on the obd live data. This is my wife's daily driver and I won't get the parts for three or for days. The design of the 09 XK thermostat makes me wonder about its function. I am thinking of removing the thermostat until the new part arrives. In a GM or Ford the removal of the thermostat would help the flow and help lower the temp with q side effect of a delayed worm up time. My question is would removing the thermostat cause any problems in my jaguar.

 

It will throw a CEL because it isn't warming up quickly enough which affects emissions. Without the housing it place it may also flow coolant too fast so it doesn't have time to transfer the heat through the radiator. It's kind of hit or miss whether it will make it run cooler. Try it and report back.

 

The temp of 224F is not critical if it happens on a hot Texas day in stop/go traffic. What is your temp on such a day with steady-state highway driving? Should be down around 200-205F. Thermostats sometimes "stick", either open, shut or part shut. If stuck shut, your temp will soar, but your radiator will be comparatively "cool". If stuck open your time to operating temp will increase.
I removed a thermostat just once - back in '64 crossing Nevada with a '55 Chev. Removing thermostat did nothing to reduce temp. on my inaccurate dash gauge.

 

So, we removed thermostat and reconnected everything, but because the housing is broken, we have a leak. So, I think this solution would have worked, but for the leak. No CEL code was thrown due to slow warming up, being that we are peak summer in Texas. So, we are in tear down mode waiting for parts and driving a rental Nissan Versa! YUK!!!

I always replace the entire housing as there is a passage between the heads that the thermostat closes for proper coolant routing and this area breaks which can lead to localized hot spots and a overheat. plastic lives forever in oceans and landfills. just not on engines

 

I would not run a modern emission FI engine without a thermostat. Just my opinion but I believe the experts would also support it. Old carb cars could work somewhat well with out but newer engine management systems react much differently. Just my opinion.
