Default Be Careful ...

When I had the windows of my Lexus tinted a few years ago, I chose a medium - dark film whose properties (UV reduction, heat reduction, etc.) were exactly what I wanted. What I didn't realize - until after the fact - was that the tint also reduced my ability to see through it as well at night. Since the windshield only had the 'factory tint', looking out of it looked the same at night as it did during the day. And, looking out of the newly tinted side windows during the day was fine. But, at night, looking out of the side windows noticeably reduced my ability to see people walking in the crosswalk. It was also noticeable at night when looking through the rear window while backing or parking. I still liked the way the car looked but it was a big enough concern that I chose not to have my Jag windows tinted. They now offer a tint that is not at all dark but has all of the other desirable properties. That might be what I do to my Jag now.

One annoyance thats bit me several times...
Never forget to replace the seatbelt through the loop in the seat (which is very easy to forget if you have kids that ride in the back) otherwise the next time someone rides in the passenger seat, when they undo the seatbelt and let it go it will usually fly back and scratch the tint on the side window.

Agreed, it diminishes visability at night significantly. My side windows are 35% and I have to pay extra careful attention, even on a cloudy day. I also can't gesture to pedestrians to go or to wait, because they can't see me. Which means it may take an extra second or two for them to feel comfortable crossing. At times I'll have to lean forward so they can see me through the windshield before they'll cross.

Still, I live in a walkable community and I've been nearly run down myself in the crosswalk, twice, during the day, by people who fail to stop at stop signs, no tint involved. It seems to me that a lapse in attention (and just maybe a cell phone was involved?) is more dangerous than window tint.

Don't text and drive! Oooo, I'm going to put that in my sig.

Ceramic tints provides the benefits of heat reduction and UV without having to be so as dark as normally.

It is getting pretty hard to find anything but ceramic these days without specificly asking for it. Many states have outlawed the metallic or Mylar films, and with the proliferation(sp?) of cell phones, the metallic films kill interior reception. Ceramic won't hinder RF so it is the mainstay of most tint shops.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I noticed on my Convertible 2008 XKR the back window is not glass like the other car windows, can I still get it tinted?

Good question for a vert owner to answer, but I would not think of any problems.
Well... Maybe one?....
Your back window is known for delaminating over time.... Wonder if added heating from having tint would speed up the process?

Hope others in the know have a good answer for ya...

I just had mine done at the dealership, and I noticed some at first, but as the tint has set, it's become essentially unnoticeable. I was unsure about tinting at first, but it looks fantastic now.

I'm still contemplating tinting my XKR.....if I do I'll probably only do the rear window and use a ceramic tint.

Uhh this doesn't sound right.. The one in my 2000 XKR conv was definately glass, and I just checked the one on my 2008 XKR conv, and I'm pretty sure its glass too. If it actually isn't glass then its doing a scarily good impersonation of it.

I don't know why I keep saying 2008, mine is a 2009 but I just checked it again and tapped the rear window with my nail and yes I think it is glass, the only reason why I thought it was plastic was one time I was washing the car and my hands felt numb and I touched it and for some reason thought it was plastic, thank you for your help!

At night in the rain is the true test. I would have gone lighter.

Thanks for the tip. Very easy and accomplished within a couple of mins. Pulled mine this evening in preparation for tinting. Thanks!

I was wondering if you had any info on how this is done. I am looking at having my 2010 XK booked in and the place I use had concerns as to how they would get past the rubber but if window comes out easy its happy days

All my cars have tinted windows. On the XK I have the lightest tint on the side windows which still contrast quite nicely against the liquid silver colour of my car, the rear is dark. No distortion at all. And yes, I pulled the rear windows…. Gordon K. - just remove the 10mm bolts and give a little tug. Yes, there will be slight resistance with the rubber seal but they slide out quite nicely.

The place I used pulled the rubber seals out and replaced them. In the process dust somehow got under the tint and the window had to be re tint-ed a week later. I put 35 on the side windows and 5 percent on the back. The 5 looks awesome I wish I would have done 5 all around in the daytime the 35 looks really light with my light interior.
