Default XK Exhaust Mod Opinions

Went by a local exhaust shop and they "sold" my on going with two "offset-offset" Magnalow mufflers to replace the OEM muffler. The mufflers are stainless, but they said they could paint them black before installing. I am going with the stock exhaust tips and my goal is to make it as OEM looking as possible.

Has anyone gone this route with Magnaflow's before? Whole job will be under $600

The exhaust shop is suggesting to install the mufflers much further to the back and you have in your video with the original tips and pipe after the muffler. I am not going with dual tips. Do you feel the Magnaflow Cross pipe is essential piece? They are saying it is not worth it.

Basically, the mufflers would sit under the heat shield.

Nice job. Just wondering why you replaced the Mina? Did you have any drone with it? (I did on my 4.2 XK) Any drone with the Magnaflows at freeway speeds?

This looks like the route I may go as Milltek exhaust is insanely priced.

That's an option as well, but I might just go straight pipes past my existing X pipe. Nothing good on the radio anyway

Originally the mufflers would have been all the way back. My exhaust guy (Greg at MBSolutions) is just a very dedicated manufacturer and is proud of his work. He made the suggestion to make the mufflers centered even and then the tubing to look like an E-type from behind. Except it splits rather than come out in the center of course.

The XKR-S comes stock with the x pipe. If you have pre-resonators then yes I would have them replaced with one x pipe. The x pipe will "smooth/even out" the tone compared to straight pipes.

The Mina had very little drone and at very low RPM about 1,100 to 1,200 rpm. You have to listen for it and really stay in that rpm range to notice it. It was just not loud/aggressive enough for me. It is certainly a great improvement over a stock XK/R exhaust system just not over an XKR-S which is already straight through with just an S shaped bend through the end muffler. Compared to my XKR-S dynamic exhaust the burble and gurgle from the over run was just too deep to be heard inside the car. You could hear it outside but inside it was gone, something I wanted to hear.

I am now scheduled to get HFCs installed on the 5/28 which should further increase the volume of the exhaust without really altering the tone.

In my opinion and from listening to many videos on youtube, including mine and knowing what mine sound live I want to say that my exhaust now sounds like the quicksilver. Difference is that I have two mufflers instead of one but the mufflers are straight trough without a baffle. My guy originally wanted to install Super Series 10 flowmasters. This is the video that scared me away from this. You can also clearly hear the missing x pipe in neutral as it burbles back and forth between the left and right side, like a Harley on drag pipes without cross over.

Starting at 4:20 is where I decided it was too much for my taste.

You want agressive you go with these and yes our cars sound like Mustangs, I am pretty sure the 5.0 was developed with Ford.

Instead of spending MORE money to get louder, I'm just going to start at full volume and bring down to taste. Other then the horrible original tune for 1200 the exhaust was 2500 bucks in the garbage. So I'm feeling a bit of trepidation in spending cash on an exhaust until I actually drive the car with said exhaust system.

I want to hear a high HP V8, my car sounds like a 747 taking off at full throttle when the boost kicks in.

That car has a different cam profile which is causing that loopy idle which I don't want. Man I hate Mustangs LOL

I think you can get the Quicksilver done for less than $500 at any custom shop. Just replace the cross over pipe with a small size muffler and then straight pipes back.

i have the original OEM non-performance active exhaust. Wonder if I could just have them uninstall one of the resonators - and then just do straight pipes back. All they would be doing is straight pipes?!?!

Does Greg know anybody in the Columbus, Ohio or surrounding areas that he would let work on his ride??? ie a good referral for me??

Someone else did this awhile back and the results were good. Its a good low cost solution and you loose that extra weight behind the rear wheels.

So, the exhaust is getting done on Tuesday. I am going with two offset-offset Magnaflow mufflers and an x-pipe to replace the resonator. I hope this does not come out sounding like a juvenile fart can Civic... I'll never hear the end of it from my better half and friends. I've only told one friend and Elys doesn't know yet. Since I am keeping the stock tips, I want to see if she'll even notice. I am not going to paint the mufflers.
