Hello forum members, back with just a quick one, thankfully car has been mechanically reliable.
Had a rattle for the past month or so, definitely coming from under the car. visual inspection could see central heat shield was hanging low, needed replacing. Had that done at a Jaguar garage today, they checked the other heat shields and applied the 'large washer' fix where necessary. Annoyingly still had a rattle when driving back, had dreaded thoughts of a ruined catalytic converter or something expensive. Got back under the car, looked at exhaust mounts this time. Easy spot, the rear back box exhaust mount which is affixed to the body of the car has come off, through corrosion, other one is likely soon to follow. Haven't 100% confirmed this as the source of noise but fairly confident as its chunky metal plate thats going to be hitting the exhaust when going over rough road/bumps. Right rear exhaust box mount Left rear exhaust box mount
Had a quick look on the jaguar parts website, cant find the item in exhaust parts or external fixings, can anyone identify? Also if anyones had this issue and can chime in with suggestions, would be appreciated. Looks like the bolts/studs are still in the body of the car, so that might cause issues. I imagine no welding as its aluminium tub?
Any halfway decent exhaust place should be able to prefab sommat at reasonable cost, it's their bread and butter after all.
Yeah thought so, more worried about getting the old fixings out and attaching the new one.

Didnt ask them to find the rattle, but considering they were replacing the centre heat shield which requires dropping the exhaust you'd think they would've spotted it!

I have the broken one with me and the fixings seem smooth on the other side so looks like rivets. Id rather not tap into that lovely aluminium tub, could just rivet it again after removal and cleanup? Maybe use stainless rivets and bracket this time?

Yeah, that's what I'd do, use rivets. Screws tend to tear out. Also, maybe use regular aluminum rivets with stainless brackets.
I'd talk to a body shop that specializes in aluminum body repair. They should be able to give you the name of a compatible epoxy to glue the brackets back in place.

I was assuming you can't access behind it to use rivets, keep us updated on how you get on

Blind rivets were invented for the situation when you can’t access the backside of the joint. They come in a variety of materials for galvanic compatibility.

I've never seen blind rivets that size, let alone the gun used to fix them. Looking forward to reading the update.
Considering this is what comes off to replace the centre heatshield, the garage can hardly have been unaware one of the rear hanger brackets was broken:
I was also replacing the rear heatshield at the same time when this photo was taken because it had been rattling against the top of the rear silencer.

Definitely agree there. Local independent quoted £168 to refurb, paint and re rivet both brackets, seems reasonable enough. Will post back here with results.
