Default 1960 XK150 - SE or not SE? (that is the question)

I own a 1960 XK150 which I believe has the Special Equipment Package. I have read online that the presence of an "S" prefix on the chassis number (aka the VIN) indicates that the car left the factory with the Special Equipment Package. However at least one auction house has indicated that there should be an S on the end of the engine number as well!

Here are the numbers from our Jaguar Heritage Certificate. Can anyone confirm whether this is an XK150 or an XK150SE?

Chassis no. S836752
Engine no. VA 1693-9
Body number J 10949
Gearbox number J 10949

Thanks!

Why not ask Jaguar Heritage ? I looked in Paul Skilleter's encyclopaedic book on Jaguar sports cars but there is nothing much about how SE cars were distinguished from non-SE. In fact there is nothing about what equipment was "special" ! In 1960 there were lots of options on the engine. Your letter/number indicates a 3.8 litre with the B-type head.

Hello,

Indeed, not a SE, just a Sxxxxxx.
Real SE's start with Txxxxxx.
S means extras like Wire wheels, and some other stuff.
VA head is indeed a B-head.
Same as mine Xk150 3.8 ( S847xxx and head VA2249-8 )
Regards,
Peter Jan

Default Thanks everybody

Peter, what you just told me is exactly what the Jaguar Heritage Trust said. So, "just" an XK150, no SE.

Say, do any of you guys know where the engine number, gearbox number etc are located on the XK150?

The engine number is directly above the oil filter assy on the engine block--it is also on the head on face at the front of the valley. The transmission number is stamped on a rear flange (tab) of the gearbox case and on the top of the cover. The body number is on a tag on the scuttle under the bonnet and the chassis number is on the frame under the radiator. That said the only other bit of info is the early 'S' cars did not have the 'T' prefix.

Heritage is very helpful with questions concerning the different models. When I got my certificate, I had asked about when it came out of the fire. The lady in the Heritage gave me dates and #s. Seems mine was #7 left-hand drive sent to states after the fire.
