Default [VENT] Asked to leave a French forum for defending this one :-(

I completed the satnav>3-gauge mod using the help & advice on this forum, plus the wiring harness kindly put together by WhiteXKR.

I thought I would share the information with a French XK8/R forum I was also a member of (though I didn't use it much).

I published a couple of pictures of the finished work (at their request) and mentioned the wiring harness was available from a guy I 'knew' in the US.

One member was interested, so I published the link to WhiteXKR's how-to and he ordered the part.

Then the Admin stepped in and told me I should have given full details of the install and explained how to make the wiring harness for free! WTF, not only do I not know how to make a wiring harness, but giving all WhiteXKR's 'secrets' away for free would have been unfair. After all, he did all the research and hard work and if he wants to charge $75, that's fine by me.

Anyway, the thread on the French forum quickly disintegrated into a slanging match, so I quickly left and closed my account.

Sorry, had to vent: I've been living over here in France for 25 years, but they're naive socialist attitude still bugs the hell out of me [/VENT]

Sorry for the reaction you received on the other forum but think of it this way, you are in much better company with us at jaguarforums.com . It is a problem with many other forums when you have power struggles within. I hope it does not happen here!

I went to see the post but I do not read or speak French so I guess I am good with that!

This forum is great. I have been a member here for 6 months and have yet to see any kind of animosity - a record for a car forum Everyone is so friendly here. Maybe because the Jaguar driver is just that bit more discerning and mature?

I have been on a few forums and this one is absolutely the very best, and the most fun. Best example of fun was the thread on how old we were. By the way I'm still waiting for my prize for the oldest . And it is the very best moderated and easiest to use.

Thanks everyone.

Hmmmm funny that Frog....I've had a few issues myself recently with a French car forum, still dunno why really??

Its a real shame as you were obviously only trying to help out, but as far as we're concerned, their loss is our gain as you will hopefully spend the time you would have there, here instead
Every cloud has a silver lining and all that

Note - btw guys, thanks on behalf of all here for the positive comments on the site. The mods / techs do a great job here but the members really help to make it what it is. Maybe not the biggest, maybe not the best, but doing ok

Damn! Who are they selling Jags to in France? Maybe there should be a test?

Hem hem, Norri, I've got two, OK only the wrecked one was bought here, and second hand prices are crazy high (must be LHD and registered).

As for a test, do ya think I'd have a hope in h*ll of passing

Good to see you around Frog, I can't comment about another Forum or it's management, each to their own, as it were.

But I feel that we do try to maintain an even balance, and what is very noticeable is that our members are ALL vehicle enthusiasts and do step in to help in any way they can, even when the vehicle is not remotely Jaguar.

Stick with this forum, even though we have the odd colonial, some commonwealth types, Brit expats, members from far flung corners of who knows where, strange folk from Scotlandcestershire, and me, we all try to work together, to promote the Marque and keep the cars running as they should.

(BTW, off to duck the fireworks later, horizontal howitzers are great)

I suspect the French are just a little pissed about the 3-1 U.S. victory over France yesterday in the World Cup.

That's the great thing about this forum. Great people and little drama. It helps that the mods and admins are so wonderful and take care of any problems before they blow up big. Group hug

Wow...I almost fell off my chair when I read this.

Frog, I feel like you took a bullet for me...I am sorry you had to deal with such nonsense.

This is preaching to the choir for the most part...but I'll say it anyway. I, like everyone else here loves all the free info we get on these sites. I have always felt obligated to pay back in kind, and as such have posted lots of original material: (my Garmin/HKS Gauge/Nav integration, my rear window control mod, and remote top mod to just name a few.)

I am an electrical engineer, and one thing I have learned participating on this site is that the vast majority of folks here do not want to implement a science project where they have to buy parts from a bunch of different sources and then do a pile of wiring and soldering.

It was that realization that motivated me to start offering kits. The first one was the gauge cluster conversion harness. Coming up soon will be the full function remote top controller. I feel I can bring these cool mods to a lot more people this way for a reasonable cost with a manageable installation effort.

Is there something in it for me...sure. I believe that capitalism is alive and well. I am providing a good value for one of a kind items that are of interest to many in this group.

And let me add this: Any Jagforum member that wants the 'secret sauce' to roll their own gauge cable can have it from me simply by asking me via PM...this isn't rocket science. This offer does NOT extend to the French forum.

Maybe you could take the high road and let the other forum have the 'secret sauce'. Who knows- maybe some wires might just get crossed during translation.

Thanks for your support. I have been a member of many car forums in my time and this is by far the friendliest

WhiteXKR, I am with you 100% and was quite happy to pay for your hard work and enterprising spirit. I believe one of the members on the French forum has ordered the harness from you, so that's great. Don't feel bad about what happened: I hardly bothered with their forum anyway. If they don't want my anglo-saxon input - their words, not mine - then it's their loss.

I have always maintained that France would be a great place to live if only it wasn't populated by the French, lol!

Yippee Ki Yay---and that's all I've got to say about the French forum. I have the highest regard for this forum and it's been the only one I've been associated with---so I guess I've been spoiled right off the bat. In regards to WhiteXKR---Thanks for all you do! I'm actually in the power electrical business and manage the aftermarket piece. I can tell you if anyone is buying that harness for $75 or so---they're getting one heck of a deal! If my business unit were handling that I'd be nicking you for $500-$600. Try buying a harness like that from our friends at Jaguar. Folks forget about the large overhead costs associated with major corporations and things like product mix---some are profitable and some are losers.
