Default 1997 XK8 Gearbox Fault/Code P1722

I have gone through all of the threads on this and have tried most of the tips. Here is my specific issue. 97 XK8 64,000 miles, rebuilt tranny 15,000 miles ago and is 3 months out of warranty. Work was farmed out by Madison Jaguar in NJ to Rose City Motors in Madison NJ.

Outside temp was below freezing took car to carwash and they powerwashed it more that they should have... nothing under hood but I think they got abs system wet.

Tranny was smooth as always all good. Drove car for an hour all good. Stopped on a patch of ice. Upon acceleration abs kicked in for a second and car went into gearbox fault mode.

Tried disconnect battery overnight trick. erased codes p1722 and p1000 from computer. Still no good.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks and have a great Holiday

Joe

According to JTIS there are several possibilities for P1722: Low fluid, linkage adjustment, transmission failure, Output speed sensor.
The output speed sensor circuit could be affected by water in the transmission plug, but I'm afraid you may have to go back to the shop. The P1000 just tells you the ECU has not completed internal checks of emission system after battery disconnect.

I swear I should know better than let a terrorist with a high pressure hose attack my jag. Obviously something electronic was hit. Tranny never leaked - always perfect shifting.

Just brought it to indy and he thought to 20 pin harness that plugs into the tranny was damp and not very snug.... no dice same issue.

Last 2 questions - Where is the output speed sensor located & if mechanic can reset error codes will this take her out of safe mode.

Happy Holdays to my Jag brothers

Speed sensor inside tranny. If he erases the code and it reappears it will probably go into safe mode again. There is also a cable connection above the bellhousing for the TCM. This is obviously very frustrating. Maybe one of the more experienced contributors will have some advice.

The software on his reader was too new for 1997 xk8, so I dont think he really cleared the code from the car. My $55 reader erases the code but not really - IDK - There is a higher end device that tells car to forget the code? Bottom line is after a code clear - same old issue from many posts on this issue. Great in reverse and forward needs about 1500 rpm to clunk into gearbox failure (safe mode) and 4th gear hell.

I took out the TCM and thought I would peek at it. For a 17 year old car it amazes me how a part can look as good as new. Contacts clean as well. So pissed - doing this with flashlight and 25 degrees outside.

Getting desperate and pondering if water got though nose and hit the abs module. Its pretty close to the front. But the P1722 isnt faulty abs.

Perhaps connecting TCM in the morning after being in warm house will resolve....

Sad in NJ - Joe - Any other thoughts guys??

If you did not disconnect the battery when you pulled the TCM that could set the 1643 code.
