Lightbulb 1997 XK8 - Rear Windows and Top

I am new to the forum. I have a 1997 XK8 that I am in the process of restoring. It is pretty rough. The rear windows will not roll down. The power top button actuates the regulator motors, but the cables are completely off, and tangled around the spiral pulleys. So, I have to replace both regulators or have them rebuilt. No big deal there.

My question is, should the top be trying to retract even with the rear windows in the full "up" position? The power top motor never comes on at all. I am thinking there must be a limit switch on the window regulators that lets the security module know that the rear windows are retracted before it will run the motor for the power top. However, I don't KNOW this for sure.

Can anyone out there help?

Default Make sure you’re starting lowering with everything closed up

Mustangmoon,

+1 to Johnken. He knows his stuff.

Simple question but you should start with everything fully closed. When you push and hold down the top lower button, do door windows drop 1/2 inch and quarter windows drop too?

Then windscreen hook should open up and then convertible top should start moving.

John and Dave are speaking and providing truth,,, it's a painfully delicate and unforgiving sequence of events to raise and lower the top and all its associates...

I wouldn't raise or lower,,, only manually to do the work,,, until you get the quarter windows completely sorted. Believe it or not, anything else can do more harm than good.
