Default 1998 XK8 glove box latch

New to me 1998 XK8 coupe that I feel may have a problem. Someone with a similar car could chime in. Went to place my registration and insurance certificate in the glove box with the manuals and went to close the glove box door and it would not close. The damper works and the door opens softly however in order to close the glove box door I have to lift the latch to close it. It stays closed and opens well but I can't believe Jaguar made the glove box door latch to work that way. Could someone confirm that their handle has to be lifted to latch the door and if there is some problem does anyone know a fix? I'll only need to get in there when I get pulled over by the police for my registration and insurance but I'd like it to be right if its not correct.

Look underneath the handle. There are metal bars extending left and right. Dirt and debris will hamper the movement. Clean them off and the plastic can engage to hold in place.

I posted a photo of this a few years ago on this site.

Figured it'd be easier for me to find.

Many thanks. I didn't think Jaguar built it that way. You photo is very much appreciated. I'm sure I'll be able to repair it now using your detailed explanation. I did conduct a "search" prior to asking the question however most questions refereed to the lock itself or the damper question. It was kind of you to answer, thanks again.

You're welcome. Hope it works easily for you. FWIW I advanced searched on posts created by Johnken, keyword glove. I tell you this because a related post that will come up on this topic has the factory diagram just in case you need it.
