Default 1998 ZF transmission output oil cooler line question

Many of you helped me start to get squared away to repair my ZF5 HP24 tranny a few weeks ago, I've found a shop and will summarize when done.

Right now we found the outlet oil cooler line

(NJC4500AA)

Is stripped (no idea how). So I either replace the line $225 or find a suitable connector to splice in.

Does anyone by any chance know the size of the connector that screws into the side of this transmission? Looks like the previous pipe had an M15 connector, research isn't turning up anything solid. I've seen indications that it may be an M20 on the newer pipe (1998-2002) but there are contradictions out there.

Didn't they use the exact same transmission case throughout the 5hp24 run? If so none of the websites explain why they changed output cooler pipes after 1997.

Well if anyone might know, I'd sure appreciate it. Can't wait to get her back on the road.

Thank you,
John

Hi John,
Is there enough thread on what you have to measure the pitch & diameter?

The fitting is aluminium and *very* soft - the one that I took out on the old outlet pipe looked like it had seen some battles and the thread was in a poor condition. Better that than the trans housing, though.

I can't see a difference between the 97 and later, but early is specific to VIN <= 018107 from what I've found. It's still available from Heritage so there must be something...

Michael,
thanks. The mechanic says the casing is stripped too. Thanks to jag jag Jay I have a spare case. None of the cases are from 1997 so thats good.

Now just trying to find a screw in male to compression fitting. I may scour local parts stores and see if I can test a few M15, M18, M20 if I can find them. Otherwise its bite the bullet and spend $225 for new pipe to be cut up.

BTW would it really be that hard to tap out the stripped casing and fit a slightly larger male connector? The last thing I used a tap and die on was a 1/8th inch piece of iron for a small screw. That was so easy I might be fooling myself thinking something this size would be 20 minutes with a tool and oil? Anyone experienced?

Follow up on the tap and die question. Spoke to mechanic, its a no go. His experience shows its just too likely to crack the case, even more likely to weaken the connection too much.

Thank God for Jag jag JayJagJay and his generosity, I've got a spare case he can use. Purchasing the pipe this morning from Jaguar.
