2001 xk8 4.0
DOM: 11/2000. 2001 XK8 convertable I believe I have second generation Timing Tension brackets. Is that correct and if so should I be thinking about replacing them? The car has 56,000 miles. WJP
Welcome to the forum WJP,
Engines built after August 13th 2001 have second generation tensioners so your original plastic tensioners are on borrowed time.

Should I replace the water pump and thermostat at the same time I replace the Tension brackets? From your experience, what is the ball park price for having a professional do the work?
Yes to that and also the crossover pipe and radiator hoses. This could run $800 to $1500 easily just doing upper tensioners and plumbing.
If you are going to use professional services for what most of us consider DIY projects this could be a very expensive car to maintain.

There's three regular issues with the XK8/XKR:
1.) plastic tensioners
2.) cooling system - water pump/thermostat tower/hoses
3.) so called 'sealed for life' transmission - a fluid change at around 70k miles extends life
Most buyers end up doing all the above and then enjoying troublefree driving.
