2002xkr transmission issue?
My XKR has been making some noise from the trans as of late. I believe it makes more noise in 2nd gear than others and varies intensity when applying throttle and letting off. I do know transmissions, as I specialise in asian transmissions. It sounds like a planetary gear or thrust bearing noise. The question is; has anyone had any experience with this? The noise was fairly quiet for the last 1000 miles, but now on the way home today it started getting worse. Trans shifts fine, but makes a whirring sound when letting off of the throttle, almost to a knocking sound when coming to a stop. There is no vibration, and until today I could only hear it when letting off of the throttle and slowing towards a stop. Any advise? Also if I am corect, where to get parts on southern california.
I was incorrect. I put it up on a hoist when I got to work this morning and found the noise to be coming from the Differential. loudest at the right side final drive output bearing. Wierd thing is that it does change pitch when you let off the gas, so you would think it to be a pinion bearing. Any trick to replacing these. Is there a trick to getting the diff out of the car? Or is it like the old jag's where you have to remove the whole rear suspension assembly to gain access.
removed and replaced all the bearings in the diff, but noise is still there. It appears that the pinion is out of true. Backlash would vary when turning pinion. I have never incountered this before. You can even feel vibration from the plate that bolts to the front of the diff. Any one know where to get a used one for a reasonable price? I already have new bearings for the out put shafts so really just need a good carrier.
